how long the LB is intended to last?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how long the LB is intended to last?

I am 30 years old and if I get the LB today, will it have to be swapped out for a new one in, lets say, 15 years? I know that the LB is relatively new in comparison to gastric bypass, so I wanted to know what the lifespan on the LB actually is. I've read that some people do have issues with the LB (leakage, etc) which requires them to have it replaced. But if I never have any issues with the LB, can it remain inside me for the next 40 years if I live until I am 70 years old?

This question has me wondering if I should start to consider bypass instead.

Good morning

I was under the impression that the Lap Band is intended for life..They say (my surgeon's office) that if someone is having alot of problems they can have it repaired/replaced or removed..

my office where I go to get fills uses xray to they can see where the port is and they dont damage it..I hope this helps..

According to doctors... a lifetime.

According to stats... 5 years or more

According to the FDA... 10 years.

It is a man made object, it does have a plastic diaphragm, the plastic isn't going to last forever. The silicone will.

If the correct needle is used for fills the port can be injected 50,000 times before it fails.

The reality is it wont outlast you. Its a manmade item and the most likely part to wear out is the balloon. There is a very high likelihood of having to replace your band at some point in time.

I attend prof. O'Brien's practice and HE is perfectly upfront about that as a worldwide authority, so I'm not exactly sure where some doctors are getting their information from if they say the band will outlast you by 50 years.

However, it hasnt been in use for that long so we shall see. Its also quite likely that if and when your band wears out there might be a better alternative.

They havent studied the band long enough to be able to tell ppl that it will outlast them! I think that is something the remains to be seen "how long it will really last" I'm only 26 and the idea of having to have another surgery to redo my band....not a fun thought...I hope it lasts a LONG LONG time though.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
