3 weeks post op pain, hernia and lab band

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Just hoping can I find some help as my surgeon tosses pain meds at me and I'm frankly a bit frustrated. I have severe pain with sitting to type at the computer; stabbing; knifelike to the point where i have to stand to get relief. I have an appt with another surgeon in the practice but am really quite down as I asked how soon I could retrun to work and I was told 2 weeks! Is this common with a hernia repair?? If there is anyone out there who can tell me when this will abate I would so appreciate it:frown:

Umm no I was only off work 3 days for my surgery. I also had the band put in and a fairly large hiatal hernia repaired. It was done laproscopically.

The area was tender for about a week but that's pretty much it. Yea definitely follow up with another doctor.

My first question would be where are you feeling the pain. If it is in your left shoulder/neck area and feels like a knife stabbing, then there are certainly others with the same pain. When I first had it I thought something was seriously wrong. It hurt like a horse kicked me or something, nothing light or easy to ignore.

I had a hiatal hernia repair and had this extreme pain until about 5-6 weeks out. Tylenol did nothing for it. Massage helped a little bit and laying in a bathtub (taking care not to run enough Water to cover any belly incisions but enough to soak your neck/shoulder area helped much more.

It went away over time. My surgeon said it was common with hernia repairs and was referred pain that was actually originating from a nerve in my diaphragm. There was nothing to really be done about it, just waiting it out.

Does this sound like it could be your issue?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
