My doctor had me on a pre op diet for two weeks wherein I lost about 10 lbs. Since the surgery on 3/12, I have lost 2 more lbs., but I gained a lb. of that back. I AM SO HUNGRY! I'm following the post op diet to the letter with 3 Protein Shakes a day, sugar free Jello, low fat/calorie yogurt, broth, skim milk, etc., but I don't feel like I'm losing. I've read that until the first fill, healing is the main goal. Am I doing something wrong? Am I overeating somehow? Thanks for your input!

You are doing fine. If you are following the Post-op diet as your doctor subscribed, I wouldn't worry about it. Ignore the scales for right now. Your body is going through some shock and may be holding on to your fat. When we do not get enough calories, our metabolism slows down and we don't burn as much fat. For this reason, many surgeons will tell us to expect a small weight gain during these weeks. Personally, my goal at this stage was to heal, not to lose weight. I just followed the doctors advice regarding the types of foods I could eat, not the quantity. Once your body heals, you'll have plenty of time to lose the weight. Just be patient.

God Bless!

I am 8 days out from an overnight stay The first thing I noticed was that I weighed more at discharge than I did at admitting! They pumped fluids in during the stay and I was about 6lbs more. It is slowly going down and I seem to have the same instructions as you.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
