Hi, I'm getting banded on 3/11/09 and I'm just a little nervous. My doctor didn't require me to do a pre op diet, so I hope this is ok. I'm on Clear Liquids only tomorrow. I can't believe it is finally happening.

Congrats Lavon! Please keep me posted! My doctor didn't require me to go on any pre op diet either. He said I wasn't THAT huge, I don't carry my fat in my mid section, and I'm not diabetic. So the surgeon said I'm not required too do anything special before hand. How long have you been on the program? What area (In CA) are you getting your surgery? Good luck to you on Wednesday! I'll say a prayer for you  Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi,

The surgery happened yesterday; I went in at 5:15am and went to surgery at 7:30am. I was discharged at about 1:00pm. I had my surgery in Orange County, CA. I actually had a herniea repair also (it took an additional 30 minutes for this); I didn't even know I had one until last week when they did an EDG because of something they saw on my upper GI. There were no other problems that came up. The doctor said that it went well. I'm sore but that is to be expected. It is mostly hard getting up and down, but I'm okay when standing or laying. I think I may be having some gas pains in my shoulder today and was surprised that my neck is sore. I'm just thankful that it is over with and can't wait til the soreness goes away. Thanks for the prayer - I'll say one for you too.

Hi Lavon!

How you feeling today? Hope the pain isn't so bad. Wow! Your hospital visit was fast...

Did you take BEFORE pictures? If not, you may want to soon. You can track your progress. Some of the photos on this site are soooo inpsirational.

Today is my pre-op appointment. I know I gained weight since my last visit. I hope it didn't jeopardize my surgery. Keep in touch and keep me posted! It's nice to have someone to share our journey with...

Hi,

I sent a response the other day - not sure what happened as I didn't see it posted. I am doing well and trying to wean off the Rx pain meds. I am walking several times a day. The hardest part is getting up and down. Laying and standing are fine and even sitting in the right position. I am more sore than I thought, but they did do the hiatal hernia repair, too. Let me know how you do.

Lavon

So glad to her you are up and around. Is the pain from the hernia or the banding? My surgery is on Wednesday and I'm returning to work on Monday. I hope I'm not going to be in too much pain. I went to my pre-op last Friday. The incision is soo high. I hope I can wear a bra, yikes! I also gained some weight (11 pounds) so doc has me on a 5 day clear liquid diet. Jello is my new best friend.

Hi,

I think going back to work so soon may be pushing it. It is difficult to say if the pain is from the hernia repair or lapband, but it is managable. Be sure to get some adult strength liquid tylenol to take if you are working. I can wear a light weight sports bra, so hopefully you can too. Pretty much I am wearing sweats and t-shirts only since the surgery. Too bad about the liquid diet. Hang in there.

Surgery yesterday wasn't too bad. I felt more pain in my shoulders, than in my tummy area. This morning no shoulder pain, but it feels like I had a MAJOR abs workout. That tight achy feeling. Not too bad. I still can't find a comfortable position to sit in. Lying down is great and standing is great, but sitting makes me feel like when I use to wear tight pants... hard to breathe.

Be sure to walk as much as possible it will help with the gas pains in your shoulders. A friend of mine said that she got severe gas pains in her shoulder three days after the surgery. I'm probably up to walking almost a mile a day already at day 9, but I break it up into about 3-4 walks a day. I still am not comfortable sleeping on my side yet but I'm getting there and feeling pretty good. Glad to hear your surgery went well. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Lavon! How you doing? Just wanted to check in... I'm doing great! I went back to work 5 days after surgery. Yesterday I started getting my appetite back. I'm eating solids now. I'm having my first fill on 4/13. I hope you are doing well. Feel free to e-mail me directly at auntykatsu@hawaiiantel.net if you want.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
