Help me understand why one shouldn't eat solids after a fill?

Recommended Posts

I need help understanding why it takes 2 days of liquids and 2 days of mushies before one can eat after a fill - - It isn't like after surgery when there are stiches and wounds to heal. Please help me better understand.

Thanks!

because your stomach may swell after a fill...and if you go straight to solids and throw up your stomach will swell even more and you may require a complete unfill. so best to follow doctors orders. hope this helps :tongue2:

You do this because you want your lapband to work. The main reason is so that your stomache can slowly get used to being tighter and second the 2 days of liquids and 2 days of mushies really jump start your weight loss! I always lost the bulk of my weight right after a fill. Good luck and I hope this helps. The rules of the band are simple to follow and are there to help "optimize your weight loss!"

Everytime that I got a fill I would be on liquids for about 3-4 hours prior to fill. After I got the fill I would drink Water and eat a Protein bar soon after to make sure I am not too tight. I was told to eat mushies for the rest of the day. The next day I can move to softs then solids later that day. I guess every surgeon is different. So far I have had no issues. :tongue2:

My fill doctor has no restrictions. They said I just need to be careful as I adjust to the new fill level and test the waters regarding restriction with the band.

I asked about the logic behind it because so many people do go on liquids . . . they said some people are tighter right away, and some take a few days/weeks for their fill to kick in, as long as we are cautious it shouldn't make a big difference.

However, I do recommend following your doctors plan, whatever it happens to be.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
