3 month wait before first fill?

Recommended Posts

That sounds like a long time, doesn't it?

It was supposed to be 6 weeks, but I went in yesterday for my final preop appointment and the doctor said that they'd like to wait until 3 months to do a first fill.

We're going to have to see about that. He thinks I'll have good restriction with just having the band placed and won't need it, but I have no idea what he's basing that decision on.

I guess I'll have to see what I feel like post surgery and if I don't have restriction like he thinks I will, I may have to have a serious discussion with him.

I can stand the 1 month preop diet, and I've been mentally preparing myself for 6 weeks of bandster hell, but 3 months of it just seems like too much.

I was banded on 10/13/08 and waited 4 months til my first fill on 2/19/09. I lost 30 lbs but then gained 5 for a net loss of 25 lbs by the time of the first fill. I dropped that 5 lbs over the last 2 days. Just follow the rules and your doctor's advice. Everyone and every doc is different. This isn't a race. It's a lifestyle change. Good luck!

There are some people who have restriction after surgery and do not require a fill for several weeks.

After starting the post-op solid food stage, some indicators for needing a fill might consist of:

  1. Always hungry and not feeling full or satisfied after a meal (and I am talking solids, not slider foods)
  2. No losing weight
  3. Able to eat large quantities of food

If this occurs to you, then talk to your doctor and discuss the possibility of having a fill prior to his 3-month post-op surgery policy.

Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
