When is it time for an Un-Fill?

Recommended Posts

I had my lap band surgery 10/13/2008. Everything has been going very well, in some cases better than expected. I have lost over 57 lbs and I have made various exercise gains. I had my first fill in January and still no problems. This week I had problems with food getting stuck in my band. I have even went back to Jello and still have discomfort. I think that maybe I should have an Un-fill. What are your thoughts?

I had my surgery 4 months before you and had my first unfill yesterday. I didn't want to do it but am so glad that I did. Talk to your doctor. But know that he will probably suggest to do an unfill. I was where you are now. For some crazy insane reason I had him tweek me and give me a very small fill again. Then the big problems started for me...throat closing, bad acid, vomiting. So I wish I had done this unfill instead of a fill. It really does sound like you have too much in you. Good luck and let me know what happens. Pam

I had my surgery in 5/2008 and had about 4 fills since surgery. I went in at the end of January and had 0.5 ml put in, could drink Water in the office fine. Later that night, I could not eat food, I felt like something was sitting on my chest, only fluids would go down in sips. I had really bad heartburn. I got really scared. I went about a week doing this and made an appt and got 0.3 ml taken out. It made such a difference. It was like night and day. I'm glad I didn't let that feeling go on for any more time. I lost 4 pounds in 6 days during that time but I felt horrible.

I wish my doctor had only taken a little out of my band. He practically drained mine! Now I am stuck for a month with no restriction. But I do have to say that I no longer have those dreadful symptoms.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
