Hello everyone well today I had an Upper GI done (nasty) I only have two more test to do. Today I am also going to the Dr to see if she can give me help with quitting smoking before my surgery which is May 19. I'm hoping I can do it in 3 month. I know it is going to be hard because I am 48 and I have been smoking since I was 16. But I know I can do it. :w00t: My surgeon wants me to do it before my surgery. She tells everyone she will not do the surgery until you have quit smoking for acouple of months. Does anyone have and ideas on how to do this? Please don't be ulgy about it. (lol)

Quitting smoking was the hardest thing I've ever done. But it has been the best thing ever! I played around with quitting for a few months. Tried Patches, lozenges (spelling?) and even some prescription meds. Nothing seemed to really work. It seemed like the more I played with all the fake nicotine stuff, the more difficult it was to not want to smoke. Finally I decided to just stop - stop it all! I just quit cold turkey. I won't lie to you - the first week was miserable! But, after that it got easier a little bit day by day.

My husband was supposed to stop with me and he didn't - at first I was very upset with him because I was jealous that he was still smoking and I wasn't! I'm over that now - I just pray and try to gently encourage him to not give up.

I did not try the Chantix - I hear pretty good things about it so maybe your dr will give that to you.

You can do this too! You just have to make up your mind. My doctor wont operate either if you smoke - I guess that's what finally helped me make up my mind.

Good luck to you!

I quit in May of 07 when I learned about the surgery. I am being banded on Feb 5th - yikes - but am so glad I quit smoking. It was the hardest thing I have ever done....and know I can do this because of it! I used Chantix - WONDERFUL - after many many failed attempts of welbutrin, patch, lozenges, and cold turkey. My only warning is that u will have vivid dreams and terrible gas:crying::tongue:

Good luck! You can do it!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
