Food keeps getting stuck- What should I do??

Recommended Posts

I've had the band for several months but only got a big fill for the first time on Monday January 26th. Up till now I could eat pretty much what I wanted without any problems (except for carrots and dry chicken that is) but now the doc has added 1.5 more of saline and I can't eat anything without it getting stuck.

Tonight I made Pasta with meat sauce. I drank some Crystal Light with it, I didn't remember that I shouldn't do that. Halfway through dinner, the pain was intolerable, and I started to wretch. I forced myself to throw up all I could to relieve the pain but it kept up and I felt like my stomach and back were being pushed from the inside. I have never had this pain so I was shocked at the reaction I was having.

I was in pain for over and hour, and now I still am afraid to eat. I still feel sick four hours later. What should I do and/or what did I do wrong? Thanks Marylyn

I would suggest full liquids for a couple of days following EVERY fill and again anytime you upset your pouch, like throwing up. I find if I do this, the next time I eat, and EAT CAREFULLY, I am alright. Either that or your fill was too much. I would suggest the full liquids first and if it doesn't pass, call the doc for an unfill.

Just remember, slow and steady wins!! Pasta is a hard food to eat when you have restriction I have found. Have you ever noticed that you really don't chew pasta well? Like spaghetti? Have you ever chewed it until it turns into paste? It just doesn't. You might just have to give up the pasta. The food should be the consistency of Peanut Butter or baby food before you swallow, I have found that remembering this helps me tremendously, and I don't have nearly as many stuck episodes as I used to. I can eat anything if the bites are small and I chew well enough, just not noodles!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
