How much should calorie intake worry me?

Recommended Posts

Morning everyone! I have a question about calories. I'm 3 days post-op and I'm only getting in about 150 calories a day. I'm only able to manage about 1-2oz per meal and I'm drinking carnation instant Breakfast. I have yet to finish a whole bottle of it. It only has 150 calories per serving. Should I be worried about this? Should I try to push how much I can get in at a time? I'm just trying to figure out how much to let my body tell me what to do and how much to push it.

Thanks for your advice,

Christy

Hi Christy,

We're in the same boat. I was just banded on Tuesday and am hardly able to eat anything. Post-op day 1 I had 1/4 of a sf popsicle that morning and maybe 1/4 cup of chicken broth that night. This morning I've only had 3 small bites of sf Jello and some Protein Water. I was told not to worry about calories right now but to concentrate on getting my protein and water in. Don't force too much at one time because you will get overloaded. Just sip throughout the day...at least that's what I'm trying to do. It's hard but we can do this. Good luck to you.

I wouldn't worry about the calories as much as it probably isn't anywhere close to the amount of Protein you are supposed to have. Protein Water has about 5g.

I used New whey protein bullets. One of them is only 3 oz and has 42g of protein. Really easy to get down and then if you only can do a little more liquids during the day you are fine. They are kind of expensive but you only need one a day. About 3.50 at GNC. They are thick and tart tasting (hubby says like a sweet tart), but literally 2 sips and one ounce is gone. So, like I said REALLY easy to drink the thing in a day. I did one ounce every couple of hours.

** also if you get them, be sure to buy the 42g ones , they also sell some that are 26g or something like that

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
