Anybody with a hiatal hernia?

Recommended Posts

Anybody out there with a hiatal hernia before surgery OR found during surgery? I am suspect that I have one and my primary doc told me to go get a scope and have it checked out. I have heard some people say that if there is a hernia, it can be fixed during lapband surgery. Any advice?:tt2:

Mine as well as many others were repaired during surgery. The diaphragm is near where the Lap Band will be placed so it is a good idea to get it taken care of since the surgeon will literally be right there anyway. Not getting it fixed could cause problems down the road.

Mine was fixed during surgery too. I had a big one and was on high dose of Nexium.

Heartburn and refulx are 100% gone!

I have a floating one and when they placed the band the hernia seemed to stabilze. It is no big deal but necessary so you don't have big problems.

On a personal note -- the acid reflux problems are now all gone after they placed the band. No more any type of pills to correct.

Mine was found during lapband surgery and he fixed it (no extra charge - ha,ha).

Didn't know I had one, but now that it's fixed I don't have those occasional burbs that come up in your throat like I used to, and never related it to a hernia.

Mine was fixed during surgery as well. No heartburn since! HOORAY!! My husband is jealous

Your surgeon should be able to see if it's there and fix it all at the same time during surgery. :-)

I didn't know I had one until 4 weeks after surgery. Doc repaired it while doing band. He said if he hadn't repaired the band would not have worked properly. Good Luck to you!

I have one and my dr said he was going to fix it when I had surgery and after surgery I asked him if he fixed it and he then told me it was not that bad and did not need to be fixed.

My doc told me that 50% of people have hiatal hernias noted at time of surgery, that need to be repaired at time of surgery. If part of your stomach is in your chest (which is what a HH is!) then the band doesn't work properly. I had one I didn't know about, 'pretty good sized' per my surgeon, that was repaired when my band was placed.

I can't see why you will need an endoscopy to figure this out. Your doc will be checking this and fixing it at surgery anyway. Check with your surgeon before having this done at recommendation of your PCP- your surgeon may not think it is necessary.

Wow, thanks for all the responses! I had no idea this was so common! I am thinking that I will hold off on the endoscope then and let my surgeon, who will be in there anyway, do his job! Thanks again! And as a bonus, I can't wait to not have anymore acid reflux or heartburn...I have had these symptoms for like 10 years! So many beneifts of the lapband just keeping coming to light! I hope to have my surgery in mid or end of February! Can't wait! : )

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
