Available Lap Band Buddy / Mentor I'm here to help

Recommended Posts

Hi there. I guess you could put me in the "success" category. I'm am a 35 year old female who began my lap band journey on April 30, 2007. In September 2006 I had reached the point where I couldn't take it anymore. I went to my doctor and told him that I was interested in lapband. I had to follow the six-month "diet" before going to a surgeon. I did that and didn't lose any weight. So...off to a surgeon I went.

My surgery was planned for April 30 and I had to do a two week liquid diet (Optifast). So...on April 16, 2007 I had a "Farewell to Fat" party at my house. I was done with it and ready to begin my "new life". On April 17 (the day that I started the liquid) I weighed 275 pounds.

I am married (struggling with issues currently) and I have two lovely little boys. I work for the federal government in Washington DC. I have been with this agency for over 17 years.

To date, I have lost 128 pounds. I have a new life...I feel great, have tons of energy and feel like a completely different person. I know how hard this is to do by yourself so I am available to assist anyone in any way that I can. I know that if I can do it...anyone can...

Feel free to contact me and I'll assist you as best I can.

tina it is so good to read your post. i was reading all the bandster hell and almost panicked thinkin that i am gonna go thru this for nothhing . i am sch for april for my surgery. i too work for the gov in a round about way . am contracted to the irs.

i am 60 year old and weigh 339 now started in oct at 355. i hope to lose 40 lbs by surgery. but i need to hear that this will work. the bandster support group in my area really doesnt have any bandsters. mostly rny s so i need to talk to a person that has had the experienc and has lost.

Hi Tina,

I would be so grateful to have you as a buddy/mentor. I am currently 2 weeks post op, and my first fill is scheduled for Feb 25 (3 days after my 30th birthday!). I work for a literary magazine in Chicago, and live with my very supportive boyfriend of 2 years. I've been overweight/obese for 20+ years...my first memories of being "fat" are from 4th grade. Most of the women in my family struggle with weight issues/obesity as well.

Making the decision to get the band was not an easy one for me; I battled with feeling ashamed, like I was taking the "easy" way, like I should be able to just lose the weight on my own. But after a year of research and soul searching, I came to the decision that the band was the right choice for me, that it was a decision I could feel proud and strong about, that this was the tool that would give me the extra boost I need to lose the weight once and for all, after years of yo-yo-ing and feeling defeated and depressed every time the weight came back.

If you have the time to take on a buddy/mentee that is 1000% determined to make this work, I'd love to talk to you. Your success is inspiring, and I would appreciate your support and insight.

Hope to hear from you.

Valerie

Tina

Thanks I could really use support. I was banded 1/28/08 and am still dealing with eating slow and chewing slow. It's such a battle and right now I haven't been able to eat for 2 days. I don't know why the band got so tight. The upside is I lost 2lbbs so I'm not sure if I should get the unfil I was considering.

Hi Tina~

Your story is inspirational! I am very smiliar to you too~ I am 34 yeras old soon to be 35. I was banded 12/16/08 to date I have only lost 25 lbs. I have had two fills and do not feel restricted. When will I feel the way I did after surgery? I h ave not really lost any weight at all in 2 months and really need too! I am starting to feel like this is not going to work for me and this is not the attitude I want to have at all!

I hate being overweight it limits me in so many ways, I avoid social situations with people who knew me when I was "skinny" at this point I just want to be HEALTHY for my two little boys.

So as of today I am 3 months out and 25 lbs lost any timeline.......should I start losing again soon? I get another fill on 4/1???

Thanks!

Angie

Tina,

You're story is a great inspiration. It looks like you have a lot of people asking for your help, if you can find the time to help one more person it would be appreciated.

I am going to be banded this Tuesday and am feeling a little nervous and to be perfectly honest, feeling a little like a failure. I lost a great deal of weight 9 years ago and while I managed to keep it off for 6 years, the past three years saw it all come back on. I am as heavy as I have ever been and cannot believe I'm back in this place. At any rate, I'm looking at the banding as a tool and a way to get my life back.

Thanks for posting your story, I look forward to speaking with you in the future.

Raenee

Hi Mumof2boys!

I am almost 6 months out and I'm down 50 pounds. I have had 7 fills for a total of 8.2 in a 10cc band. I have restriction but not a lot so I tend to get hungry often. I am eating well (I think) but I'm hoping you wouldn't mind sharing a typical days worth of meals and Snacks with me. I need some ideas of what it should be vs. what my doctor is telling me because I think he is recommending too much Protein. He says one gram per half pound of body weight. When I follow it I don't lose, when I don't follow it...I lose but I'm wondering if I'm losing muscle mass. What do you think?

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
