Post-Op Exercise

Recommended Posts

Just curious... How soon after getting banded did you start exercising? Did you stick to just cardio at first or weights and cardio? How about pilates? Could you do it like before or was there too much port pain?

Thanks in advance, BABE

I started doing pilates once I felt my incisions had healed, my stomach didn't hurt, and I had no weight restrictions any more. So about 2 months out.

I was back at the gym in two weeks doing cardio though and I was walking as soon as I got home from surgery.

Hi Babe - I started with just walking for the first couple of weeks after surgery. I tried yoga - some poses I could do, others hurt my port area (those twisty ones hurt alot). After about a month, I was good to go on everything. The only thing my doctor required me to wait on was abdominal exercises - those he wanted me to wait 4 weeks before even attempting.

I did cardio for awhile, but got diagnosed with arthritis in a foot so had to change to weight work. Getting a personal trainer to set up a program was the best money ever spent. I don't have as much loose skin as I might have had without weight work. So far I'm pleased with the program.

I started walking immediately, could do some serious biking (road bike, 20-30 miles) by about day 10. I was told no pilates or ab work for 4 weeks, and no lifing anything over 10lbs for 3 weeks. I had my first pilates class today (4 week mark) and it was fine.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
