Hi,

I am in the process of trying to get approved for surgery. I had the first appointment with my surgeon and now I still need to meet with the nutrionists, and do other lab tests.

My first choice is the lap band, but he wants me to think about gastric bypass also. I have been researching both procedures extensively and I hoping some of you may be able to give me some details on your experience with the lap band. How much have you lost, pro's and cons??

I really appreciate any advice you can give me!

Thanks!

I haven't been banded that long but I can tell you from the small amount of restriction I have that I feel it was the perfect choice for me, and I started with a VERY high BMI. Good luck choosing which surgery you want; they both have their pros and their cons.

I selected the gastric banding procedure for the following reasons:

1. Reversible

2. No cutting and replumming of stomach

3. No Nutrition absorption issues

4. Slower weight loss

5. Quicker recovery

6. More control of weight loss

7. Lower risk with this procedure than gastric by-pass (But all surgeies carry risk)

I have lost 30 pounds... 10 pre-op and 20 post op. I like the band thus far.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
