Hi everyone! I'm new to the site. I just found out a few days ago that insurance will cover the surgery. I'm not quite sure when I'm getting it done but I've been reading through posts and I am so scared for the first couple days out of surgery. I do not handle pain very well and know it is going to hurt so bad! I need to get over that. Any suggestions or helpful comments? Do they give you pain meds? I know you cant swallow big pills so im guessing things like vicodin are out! I'm going to be living with my mom for a month after the surgery so i will have someone to look after me but AHHHH :tongue2: im scared...and nervous. Hopefully posting and reading responses will make me more comfortable and not so scared by the time it comes around.

I'll be truly honest. It didn't hurt me much after the surgery. I'm not "brave"...I didn't "suffer". I just didn't hurt. I will say I made up my mind to "breeze through" before it happened. I assumed I'd have it easy, and I did.

I suggest talking to your doc about your fears. They can prescribe liquid pain killers, for example (although I have been able to take pills just fine!) Not everyone has it as easy as I did but very few need a month of care, honestly. It is laparoscopic and you should feel mostly normal in a VERY short time.

I was in a lot of pain. I have a difficult time tolerating pain meds, so it was a challenging for my doctor to find just the right type of pain medication. Once the right dose and type was identified, my pain was managed and all was good.

I received liquid loritab for my pain while I was at home.

I was off all pain meds on post op day 7. (No more pain)Actually, I was feeling amazing on post op day 7 and started driving, shopping, and cleaning house.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
