Post Surgical Weight Gain

Recommended Posts

I'm so discouraged - I had my surgery on July 26th. On the morning of my surgery I weighed 259. Today (2 days post op) I'm up 7 lbs to 266. I know that they pump a lot of Fluid into you during surgery, but I think that would have dropped off already. I don't feel puffy and I was well hydrated when I went into surgery. Has anyone else had this same experience?

I was on liquids for 7 days pre-op, and I'll be on liquids for the next 3 weeks. I had my hopes up for a big loss over this period, but maybe I'm being unrealistic.

On a positive note, the surgery went great and I feel pretty good. I'm tired and a little sore, of course.

Sweetie, you are still full of fluids from surgery. The Iv's added a lot of Fluid to you. This stage is all about healing not losing weight.

Oh Lawsy! Anne...I don't think you are being unrealistic, just a tad impatient! :) Give it a minute, okay? I'm so glad you are having a smooth recovery. I envy you! Don't worry, you'll drop the weight, I promise!! Stick to your liquids, let your band heal in well, relax and go with the flow. It's true that some folks just don't lose alot on the post-op liquid diet. Dunno why. You might not lose as much as you want, but I want you to post here at 1 week post-op and tell us what your weight is. My bet is it will be less. Perhaps alot less!

Hey, welcome to Bandland!!! wahooo! You did it!

Thanks you guys! I'll try to be more patient. My stomach was sore and I was choking down a Protein Shake, so it seemed like a good time to vent. :-) I'll post back in a week and let you know where I'm at! Anne

Also make sure you always weigh on the same scale. There was an 8 pound swing between the Dr's "very expensive" digital scale and the one, (also very expensive", I was weighed on at the surgery center.

I have an expensive scale at home that weighs very consistently so I use that one for any weigh-ins. I'm still up, but it is slowly coming back off. The important thing is that I'm heading in the right direction. I'm curious though - did anyone else have such a large gain after surgery? I am trying to change my mentality to "healing" instead of "losing". It ain't easy, but I'm working on it!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
