Minkin's patients

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm doing really well. Sore, hungry and tired but I'm doing okay. I try to walk around every day a little bit. I didn't have much of a problem with gas. My biggest problem at the moment is getting enough Protein. The Protein shakes are getting really old, but the good news is that I've already lost some weight so its well worth it. I have no regrets. Hope you are all well.

peace,

kim

Kim, Just remember that you need to be patient and follow the rules. They are there to help you heal ... and let your body get adjusted to this new stomach...it's just like a baby's stomache easy does it. When is your next checkup with Dr. Minkin? Still thinking about you and sending you all the good vibes I can.

Thank you Deb, for the good energy and advice. I'm still struggling with getting in enough Protein. I may be worrying about it too much. I have an appt. with Dr. Minkin this Friday. I hope he's happy with my progress so far.

Kim, With your appointment with Dr. Minkin coming up Friday...I would like to make a suggestion that before you go in, sit down and think about the questions you have, you know all those I wonder if this is normal, or any things you are just trying to figure out... I went in with a list of about 15 questions, many were just things that have come to my mind ... this is all new to us ...so instead of guessing I got into the habit of any question I had whether small and insignificant or bigger I wrote it down. When I went in for my appt. I said I had a few questions and I read each one...he was great about answering each one. It has helped me alot learn about this new way of life.

ANyway if you are anything like me...when I go in to any doctor I get nervous and forget all the things I was going to ask until I leave the office, hence the write it down.

On the protien, I really did like the GNC 100% whey protien drink mix (chocolate Caramel was my favorite). I mixed it with skim milk. Three of those a day put me in the right area on protien. But ask Dr. Minkin. I feel the more you let him know the better he will be able to help you fine tune this new TOOL of yours.

Good Luck.

Oh by the way have you thought any about coming to the support group meetings that Des Peres Hospital has.

There is one tomorrow night at 6:30...The schedules are on the Mynewself web site. I find the meetings helpful and help me stay on track.

Let us know how Friday goes.

Deb

Hi Everyone! Glad to see some people from St.L on the boards.

I was just banded on 10-15-09. I get my first fill on 11:18-09.

I started the Sugery at 452 and now am at 433 per my office visit on 10-26, haven't weighed myself since then because my scale broke.

Just glad everything is going well. I'll need to check the website to see when the next monthly meeting is and try to schedule myself to go.

Since the sugery I haven't really felt hungry, but since I've been on mushies for my 3rd week I have been feeling that sensation slowly returning.

It seems so hard to make sure I only eat about a half cup meal, and getting all my needed liquids for the day.

Well hope everyone is doing great with their weight loss, and healthier lifestyles!

Hello everyone, it has been a very long time. I was banded aug. of 2008 and am still very happy that I did it but have been through a lot. Right now I am dealing with reflux and pain an hour after I eat. I'm going to see Dr.Minkin soon. I was 258 And now I'm 192, i've had my gallbladder removed oct. of 2010 amd then a hysterectomy jan. of 20011 and just regular band issues. How is everyone else doing?

Hi! My name is Martha and I was banded by Dr. Minkin on May 10, 2012. So far I have lost 22#. I have had 1 fill and my next appt. is July 31,2012. I think I will need another fill by then as I get really hungry now and am working really hard to follow a 1000 calorie diet.

I have now lost 34 lbs since my last post. I have also been able to add some meats to my diet. Thank goodness. I just cut them into really tiny pieces. I feel very fortunate to have had this surgery!

Kara,

I think you'll really love Dr. Minkin. He has such great bedside manner and is so supportive. This last year of being banded has not been easy on me. Even though I haven't lost as much weight as I'd hoped, he's been wonderful. He's been very encouraging and not at all judgmental. If you need anybody locally to talk to, feel free to message me.

I'm just starting my journey with dr minkin and going to my consultation next Wednesday, January 23. It's great to see people on here who support each other. I'm hoping to get that, too, from here. I don't have family support unfortunately but I do have my husband and I guess thats one good thing.

Did anyone pay out of pocket for dr minkin? I'm self pay and they said around $17,000 but a more exact number would help greatly. Thank you!!!

Ps...any support out there would be helpful, I don't really have much support from my family except for my husband.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
