Solid BM during clear liquid phase?

Recommended Posts

I hate to even ask this, but can anyone advise if it's normal to have a SOLID (although limited) bowel movement during your first week post-op while in the clear-liquids-only phase?

I have a suspicion that my wife thinks I've been munching on the side, which I have NOT been doing, but I want to head this one off at the pass if an accusation comes about!

Thank you!

Yes, it can happen. It does. Our bodies are unique miraculous machines that often work in their own ways, regardless of science or logic.

I started having them day 4 post-op - I was surprised since I was on liquids but after being constipated for 4 days, I was just happy to go.

I was banded on Thursday, Dec 11 and I have had only BM. As a RN, I'm a bit worried also. On a prior surgery I had to go back into the hospital for a bowel obstruction that decided to move during a snow storm and the dr couldn't make it in for the surgery date. Thank God! I won't see my lap band dr until this wed.

Are you putting anything on your dermabond sites; ie.neosporin

I think it is perfectly normal. Some people are constipated, some have diarrhea . . . and you are right in the middle and lucky at that.

I would be more concerned if your wife is "inspecting" your unmentionables for signs of munching, lol.

No inspections being done, but, since she and I were banded on the same day, we've been comparing all kinds of "notes" and this came up in conversation.

hubby and i were also banded the same day.

we have had totally separate experiences from fills, food, exercise, PB, can't eat in the am, you name it. it really is all random.

I think it is wonderful that you were banded on the same day. It makes the whole "diet" part so much easier when you are eating the same things. You can't have better support than having someone go through the same thing at the same stage :0).

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
