Surgery on Monday the 8th! Did this sabotage my pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

So....both my husband and I are having the surgery on Monday Dec. 8th. Hooray! We've been on a 700 calorie per day diet for two weeks. Two protien servings, three veggie servings, a fruit, and a dairy per day. However, I am a little worried. I am so used to being on the Atkins diet that I've been sort of "cheating". I realize it's important to keep fat out of my diet as much as possible to shrink my liver, but I had some sugar free candy and a little Peanut Butter. What are the chances that my liver will be too fatty? We haven't been following the diet very well these past few days...because we've actually gone to liquids and protien shakes only to ensure we have small livers. So we've been doing really well. But I've still "cheated" with some fatty foods like shrimp, Sugar Free Chocolate, and PB. Does anyone have any experience with this? Tomorrow I plan on drinking nothing but Clear Liquids to flush me out pretty much... I am just wondering if ONE day will flush me out....Thanks

I never had to do the pre-op diet myself, i believe you have to have a BMI over 40, and I was borderline, but I am a big believer in Atkins myself. I am in the medical field and I know that bad cholesterol goes down while you are on the diet, so i don't think it is as bad for you as the bad rap it gets! Congrats to both you and your husband for making this decision! i am only 5-1/2 months out, but i love my band! Just remember, you won't lose as fast as you think but it is consistant! Hang in there, and you will get there! My doc told me to expect to lose between 1 to 1-1/2 pounds a week.. On my followup visit exactly 3 months, I had lost 21 pounds... Seems like it should come off faster, but I know I am on the right road now! Good luck tomorrow!

The only thing I would worry about is the Peanut Butter to be honest...it has a lot of sugar in it, which is more dangerous to liver fat than fat itself. Peanut Butter is actually not on Atkins at all until the final phase.

Other than that, I think you are doing fine from the sound of it.

Your best bet is to just ask your surgeon.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
