Doctors With LapBand

Recommended Posts

I am a family practice doctor and was banded on 11/18. I have treated many obese patients medically and referred several for WLS, but it is wierd being on the other end of things. I have spoken to several nurses who have gone through surgery but no doctors. I was told at a professional WLS seminar that doctors and dentists seem to have worse outcomes than the general population?? I would love to hear how other doctors handle practice issues, etc. related to their own surgeries. I have not tried to keep the issue private because in a small town everyone knows anyway.

My lap band doctor is a banded surgeon and is at his goal weight. (cinncinati weight loss) In his case he is a living advertisement for the band since he has done so well. The band shouldn't interfere with how you practice. It's not like the bypass where you have to be concerned about diarrhea interrupting your day. My husband is a doctor and has the bypass and that was a concern at first but he has worked through it.

I think that if you lose weight it will inspire your patients to do the same.

Good luck!

Congratulations and I look forward to watching your journey.

I don't know many docs who have the band, but have read on here where a lot of nurses have the band.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
