Not following the post-op diet.

Hi everyone. I was banded 10/30/08 and have a post-op diet question.

Without being told the dangers of not following the post-op diet, I was wondering if anyone ignored it and ate according to how they felt? Have you had any problems since doing it your own way?

post op diet is for healing..your doctor gave you orders to help you in the healing phase..i would stick to that and not cheat because it can cause slippage or other band problems..your body has to gradually get used to eating foods again

yes, I did eat something I shouldn't. About a 2 weeks post op, I was at a party and was talking to someone and absentmindedly reached down and picked up a meatball appetizer, popped it into my mouth, chewed a few times and swallowed. The resulting pain is one i will not forget. I thought I was going to have to have the heimlich done. I am not kidding. I learned the hard way- don't try to push the healing process- because it will push back. Just a warning. good luck, and please don't make the same mistake as me. :drool:

Heck no!! Don't even think about it!! The risk is that you will wind up vomiting to the extent that all of your stitches get ripped out and your band slips. It's totally not worth it!

That said, I'm on the very tail end of my mushies phase, and I've eaten a few things that aren't really all that mushy. But I was totally strict during the liquids phase and most of mushies!

Ok - you guys are making me think -- my dr. said cream Soups so I have been making Soup and then blending the H*LL out of it with my blender so that there are NO lumps. Is this cheating? The canned soups just make me gag -- I am so sick of them. I haven't had any REAL solids although my family has ordered pizza 2X --since I am not cooking. I really don't think that soup is cheating - right? Maybe I am just asking for approval :-) thanks to you all -- stacy

Don't worry, haha. Cream soups were part of my Full liquids phase, which was Days 3-14 post-op. I was instructed to blend the heck out of them so that they weren't lumpy - which it sounds like you did. So relax, you're fine! :drool: I was doing cream of broccoli and cream of chicken, cream of mushroom - all those cream soups, i'd mix a few spoonfuls of each and blend it with milk to make it real creamy. it's actually quite good!

Thanks for responding so quickly -- I think I am a freak over-thinking everything. I was just feeling hunger PAINS -- which has been a BRAND NEW sensation for me. The blended Soups at least give a bit of satisfaction. Take care and thanks again... stacyiam

I'm 10 days post op and I am having a real hard time. I have no restriction (which I understand because the band is empty) I only stay full for about 2 hours and I don't even have to puree my food it goes down fine and stays down. the next 4 1/2 weeks are going to be so hard

I am 11 days post-op and I too have been a bit hungrier than during the first few days. I am on liquids until Monday.

I have been fighting this problem with a continuous stream of liquids. I have a creamy Soup about three times a day, a thinned out cup of SF chocolate pudding twice a day, and a stream of Water, crystal lite, Decaf tea, grape juice, Water, etc. all the rest of the time.

I have some pudding just before bed and keep a glass of something to drink by my bedside in case I wake up and need a little something in the middle of the night. Usually this is decaf tea with a bit of Splenda in it. I tend to crave something sweet when I wake up for some weird reason.

I have been steadily losing between .5 and 1.5 pounds per day. I know this will slow once I go to mushies but I have been enjoying it for now.

My brother shot a big ole buck this past weekend so I made a huge pot of deer chili tonight for my family and so my dinner was a cup of the juice strained out. It was a very nice change from the creamy Soups.

I am looking forward to mushies on Tuesday but am a bit scared of them. I don't want to overdo too much. Afraid I may just stand at the blender all day blending things up and eating! :smile2: My family will come home at the end of the day and everything in the house will be pureed and I will look like a pregnat whale!

I attribute my success and my overall health up until now to following every word that my doctor told me regarding the post-op diet. Not one thing entered my mouth that was not pre-approved by my Dr. and Nurse Practioner. I don't begrudge anyone for making mistakes or for saying that they were OK when they didn't follow the Drs. orders, but I know that if I would have strayed once that it would have been very difficult for me to get back on track. Now...I'm not trying to be a righteous bitch at all...because I've made some poor decisions over the past month and I've paid for it with a slower weight loss, but during the healing process I was a super duper good girl.

Creamed Soups were on my post-op diet after 7 days of post-op clear fluids. I detested canned Soups so made some great high Protein creamed soups and blended the hell out of them.

I know it's hard but nothing is worse than undoing all of the work that was just put into your body but in a couple of months this will all be past you.

absolutely identical to you. the liquid diet, i was like a dictator on. i turned down all foods offered, or temptation caused by driving past places i normally would pull in. other food smells, didn't even bother me. if a co-worker ordered pizza, i'd sip my Soup..and not care. i was in the zone.

when i realized i was taking in more Soup per day than normal, i realized my stomach swelling must have gone down..so i called my dietician and explained the situation. about 4 days before i was supposed to start mushies, she told me i can move on to mushies, and mix in some liquids still..so i'd have maybe some mashed potatoes and deviled chicken (underwood's can with the devil on it)..for lunch..and have soup at night. it's worked well.

now, i find my appetite is back to where it was before surgery. i am having soft foods, before i am supposed to...and feel scared, so i called her again. she let me know if i wasn't vomiting, nauseous or otherwise uncomfortable, then soft solid foods are ok. just don't over-do it...

my situation is this. i am not a healthy eater..i mean, i have certain things i love to eat, and things i will never EVER eat (seafood, eggs, brocoli etc).

my desire for the bands was Portion Control. I over-eat, always have. I'd eat an extra large pizza by myself...and when that didn't fill me up, i'd have to have breadsticks with it. then wash it down with a 2 liter of soda. in one sitting.

my reason for the band was to limit my portions. to know what amount is going to be good for me, and mix my less portions with proper exercise. soda was my big weakness...i'd drink sometimes two 2 liters a day..seriously.

my caffeine addiction was terrible. and i am proud to say that a drop of soda has not touched my lips since Oct. 29th...over 3 weeks now..no cravings for it at all. so i plan to drop weight that way.

so my keys to my weight loss will be:

1. no soda

2. very very small portions to curb and quit my over-eating

3. no fast food

4. walking walking walking

but "healthy foods" and "counting calories"..just isn't me..so yes, i am a cheater, with my reasons.

I'm day 16 post-op and have been playing with different Soups for a week. Now that I'm on mushies, don't have to use the blender quite so much. The problem with the cream soups is the extra calories, so I make my own. But I follow the doctor's orders fairly close. He and the nurse scared me enough with consequences of extra surgeries. But that doesn't mean I can't get creative. Adding some chipotle and lime juice to chicken broth and it isn't as much of a hardship. I added a little potato and pureed it so it was still a thin liquid but had some body and was more filling. I still can't wait until my first solid food, but I am not rushing it and risking a set back.

I was told not to worry when my appetite increases and that once I get the fills, then I will be on my way.

I am 8 days post-op and I was starting to have problems with nausea on post-op day 6. Nausea from the Protein shakes, Soups, Protein suppliments (protein bullets, etc.)

For some reason, I would just get sooooo grossed out with all that stuff. I was so unhappy when it was time to eat. Luckily, I was able to start mushies on Day 7 and my mom made these fantastic Beans with tomatoes, onions, green bell peppers, yuuumm.

And ever since then, I haven't done any protein suppliment stuff, I try to get all my protein from food sources, like Beans, cottage cheese, cheese, fish, tofu, etc. and I take my multi-Vitamin, Calcium and extra Fiber suppliment when I need it, which has been everyday, because I often am too full to eat my greens after finishing my protein.

I am going to set up a meeting with my nutriotionist and I have an appointment with my surgeon on Tuesday, and I am going to ask both of them if what I am doing is ok.

I will try and post the results of those two meetings here just in case it may end up being helpful to someone.

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
