Pre-Op Diet, not cheating, but feeling sick.

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I have followed my doctor's orders of the pre-op diet. My surgery date is Thu 11-20, so 4 days away. I'm on the 11th day of the pre-op diet. I'm 6'5" and they said I can have 3-4 Protein Shakes (mixed with 9oz of Water only), or substitute 2-3 cups of milk or a small lowfat yogurt instead of the 4th shake.< /p>

I'm pretty hungry all the time, guess that's expected. But lately, I'm feeling extremely weak, lightheaded. I can't even stand up for more then 2-3 minutes before I feel like I'm going to faint / pass-out.

I've lost almost 20 lbs in the last 10 days with the pre-op diet, but I think it's going a bit too fast. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this something normal?

I have a call into the doctor and nutritionist tomorrow, but just wanted to get people's opinions.

Hello wormhole, in fact i think you're doing pretty darn good. i felt sick on day 2-3 of the liquid diet and felt like i was not going to make it at all:sad:. my body went into shock fast i had headaches,my vision was funny and i was also dizzy. Congrads on the 20lbs :thumbup:that's a great start. for the most part you feel sick because your body is not use to going without all the carbs, and sugar that it use to have. sound like you are more than half way there and yes it is normal. the weight loss is normal also because they want you to get a jump start with losing weight and also when you move up to solid foods after surgery it will not fly off as easy. i'm on my last week of full liquids(4th week Post-Op) and feel like "enough already":cursing: with the liquids.

Hang In There You're Doing Just Fine , Congrad and Best Wishes On your New Journey:thumbup:!

I'm curious, I'm waiting for Ins. approval. How is it decided on when to go on pre-op diet, and is the diet the same for every one that is getting the lap band?

hello babycakes68, you will find that everyone is different depending on the Doctor as to which if any type of Pre-Op diet they want. and usually the pre-op diet is two weeks prior to surgery but you will find that it also varies, some do six weeks. so go off of what your Doctor tell you when that time comes.

Definitely thanks for the quick response:tongue2:. Hopefully I don't have to go on a two week liquid diet. I do give you guys kudos:thumbup: for what you've accomplished with the pre-op diet. I wish that I'll be able to do as good as you guy did. :smile2:

Hi wormhole,

Yes it is totally normal to feel that way during the pre-op diet.

I was fortunate that I wasn't working before my surgery, and I honestly couldn't comprehend how so many people have this surgery while they work up until the time of the operation.

I ended up taking it very easy, and taking a lot of naps. Please take care of yourself and don't physically overdo it. Your most important job right now is preparing for surgery! Take care, and I hope you feel better.

Thanks for the re-assurance.

I called my nutritionist today, and she was surprised at the rapid weight loss, so she actually prescribed me eating more. :)

I eat 3 Protein shakes, 8oz nonfat yogurt, and 2-3 cups of milk each day now. Before I was at about 600 calories/day now I'm up to 1000 and I feel much better.

And just for information's sake, I went to a fantastic program at St. Joseph's Hospital in Orange California. They have a wonderful crew there that really helps you through it the whole way. I started the pre-op diet 2 weeks before surgery date, and need to do it for 2 weeks after as well.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
