I think my band may be somewhere in my chest....

Recommended Posts

Hi, well I have had my band for nearly 2 years and the weight is just about gone, but last weekend, I started having extreme pains in my chest and then my entire throat started to swell...well it has been several days now and the swelling in the back of my throat has gone down, but I am completely unable to get things down, even liquids are trial and error...i wouldn't be that worried about it, but my mother's band was removed in the er b/c she passed out at work and could barely breathe and they told her that her that her band had slipped up into her chest! I would go have it checked out, but I live half a world away from my doctor, literally, I live in Asia and he lives in North America...also I am afraid that my band will be removed...has this happened to anyone and if so, did you just go back to the post-surgery diet of liquids, then mushy foods...I am just afraid that my band is up in my chest.....

You have to see a doctor, regardless of where he is. Having pain in your chest might not be associated to your band and it is imperative your call a doctor or visit an emergency room. Good luck.

If you are sure that ALL the fill is out then you probably have developed GERD (relux), which can be extremely painful and debilitating and is not uncommon in Band patients. See if you can get a doctor to prescribe Nexium or a similar medication for GERD. You should start to feel some relief within 2 weeks if it is just GERD (reflux). That might save you a bundle in money until you can get the band removed in North America. Hope that helps. -Blessings!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
