Having heartburn...should I get another fill?

Recommended Posts

My third fill was September 24. I have 5 cc's in a 10 cc band. After the fill, I had a hard time eating. I pb'd and threw up alot. I did not go back for an unfill. It eventually settled down but I still pb alot. I know that my bites are too big and I need to slow down, but now I have been getting heartburn alot. I had my hiatel hernia fixed during surgery?? Is this a sign of a slipped band???

I am due for another fill on Nov. 19. I really want it because even though things get stuck, I am alot more hungry than I used to be. I having been snacking way more than I should. I know my doctor is going to tell me not to get a fill because i have been losing steady but I don't want to be hungry all the time. My old habits are already kicking in again (snacking). It is weird how you can be tight and hungry at the same time???? Any thoughts?

Now that I am an experienced bander, I would say the answer is a definite no . . . perhaps you might want to ever consider a miniscule unfill. Reason being, you are still pb'ing a lot and already have heartburn which are definite signs of being too tight. If you get tighter, you are just going to aggravate yourself more and be more likely to get a slip while still not really affecting your desire to snack..

Unfortunately, eventhough banding can be a godsend, snacking on junk is going to go through your band regardless of how tight you are. More restriction isn't going to make this part easier, just futher aggravate the pb'ing and heartburn.

I had your same dilemma in the past, thought I would get another slight fill and not only did my heartburn go 110%, I got acid reflux where I was throwing up in bed in my sleep. I was much too tight, but I can assure you that if I had some popcorn, chips, cake or anything of that nature . . . it was moving through my band with no problems or discomfort at all.

Your best next steps would be, eliminate the snacking or allow yourself a limited snack on an allotted day or something along that line. If you are pb'ing a lot but do not feel that you are too tight, you may want to concentrate on eating slower and chewing more.

I was able to hit goal . . . but for me I had to give up snacking on anything at all resembling junk food.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
