caffeine and lapband

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for posting their thoughts.

I am considering banding. One had issue I have to deal with is Pepsi. My family used to joke that I was nursed on the stuff. I have to admit, I like carbonation. But I like non-carbonated stuff too! I am trying to focus on finding drinks that I like that are low-cal and not fizzy. I figure I can make preparations for getting the surgery while I consider it. No harm done then if I dont get banded, right?

The more I think about it the more I know that getting the surgery may be the best option.....but I think I am still coming to terms with how much this will change my life.

Anyway, Thank you!!!!

Believe me, I know what you mean. I honestly think that the thought of giving up my Diet Pepsi was my biggest concern when making the decision to be banded. I couln't imagine that I would be able to do it. I had a soda in my hand no matter where I went. It was the first thing I reached for in the morning and I took a bottle to bed with me at night. I rarely drank anything but Diet Pepsi.

I am an "all or nothing" type personality so I did not wean myself off. On the first day of pre-op diet I stopped the Diet Pepsi cold turkey and I haven't had a drop of soda since. And what I thought would be the hardest part of the whole process really wasn't bad at all. I got headaches from caffeine withdrawal for the first few days but honestly I really don't miss it all that much.

I agree that the beer part has been more inconvenient. I am not a big drinker more social and I have already found that there are many places where beer is the only alcohol choice (hocky games, concerts, local golf club) so I've had to do without. On vacation, besides wine I had vodka in the form of mixed drinks and Jello shots.

If it isn't carbonated it should be fine. I miss beer at social events, but for me, the loss is worth it.

Best wishes,

Denise

Jodi: Thanks for the input. Yes, I too really have considered the band for the same reason. Less invasive procedure. I have been reminded that there is more involved in that you have to get filled and adjusted periodically until it is just right, but it is worth it to me. How long ago were you banded? How many fills have you had? Are you satisfied with the rate of loss? The bypass is far more "augmentation" than I am comfortable with personally. (By the way, it apparently is reversible, but again, another major procedure.) It really is individual. One of the nutritionists mentioned some that had the band and later the bypass because of insufficient weight loss. Well, I have decided that if for some reason another 25 or so pounds come off, I will live with that fact. Then, I will just continue to eat healthy and enjoy my exercise. My husband is very supportive and he is certain that I will be successful. He is so sweet. It is true what they say in life, your sphere of associates is very important in your success and, also, in your failure. I am excited about weighing in tonite. I am uncertain what my loss will be, but it is a milestone because it represents moving on to another phase. No matter what that is! Have another healthy and happy day.:rolleyes2:

I gave up caffeine a long time ago simply because with high blood pressure it was not good for my heart to have that added stressor. Personally I have been soda free for over 3 weeks now and I don't miss it like I thought I would. About 6 months ago my wife and I made the decision to not keep soda in the house. That really helped cut down the amount of soda I was drinking. I don't drink it at work so that really helped too. So simply all that was left was when we ate out. I started drinking iced tea instead. Yes I know tea has a very small amount of caffiene but it is minimal compared to coke, pepsi, mt dew, coffee, and more.

I have thought a lot about beer also. I have never been a big beer drinker, well not since my early 20's, but I still like having a beer while watching football or BBQing. I have resigned myself to the fact that if I want a spirited beverage that I will either be drinking wine or mixed drinks.

The reasons everyone has already talked about. What you have to do is think for yourself in what are you willing to do. How much are you commited to this new life you are faced with. Is that soda and is that caffiene worth giving up being thin and healthy? It's a choice we all have to make.

I was a diet coke addict and always had a bottle by my bed, on my desk, in my car and in my bag! I then decided to alternate diet coke and bottles of Water prior to having surgery as I wanted to see if I would have the willpower to make these changes and now Water is the main thing I drink. I have bottles of water everywhere.

Since being banded I have had a few drinks of diet coke etc however for the most part I struggle to get through one glass and need to take very tiny sips.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
