Hello Group!!! I'm new to this community seeking to meet individuals who are thinking or may have already had the procedure performed. I am actually a post-bariatric patient who had the surgery back on June 12, 2008. Two weeks prior to my surgery, my weight was 381 with a BMI of aproximately 49. I was classified as Morbid Obese with ailments such as Severe sleep Apnea and High Blood Pressure. My surgeon was Dr. Joseph Moran with Advance Laparoscopic Associates Inc. Prior to my surgery, I was recommended to lose aprox 15 lbs due to complications that may ocurr during the surgery. Right before my surgery, I was down to 367 with aproximately 2 weeks of a liquid diet and excersise. Dr. Moran and his staff were very supportive and encouraging during this time to ensure I was able to reach my most important goal in my life, in regards to health. The surgery was a success and Dr. Moran and his staff showed great interest in ensuring I was given the tools to succeed during this time. Today, my weight is at 328 with a BMI of 42. I feel so much better as I am off my blood pressure medicine and my CPAP machine. But I still have a ways to go to reach my ideal weight. As my eating habits have adjusted to a healthy lifestyle, I need to include more excercise to my daily activities. My family continues to be my main support. I would like to attend some of the support groups, but I can't seem to find one to suit my current work schedule, which is working nights at this time. If anyone know of any support groups that have flexible times during the day time, please let me know. I don't know all the surgeons out there in the Raleigh/Durham area that performs the Bariatric procedure, so I will not say who the best option would be for anyone seeking this surgery. All I can recommend is to attend the seminars they hold during the week and conduct your own interview with there practices to ensure they will be able to benefit you prior, during, and after the surgery. But if anyone wanted to know if Dr. Moran and his team would be a great option, I would have to say YES!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
