Anyone denied due to too much weight loss?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering. Has anyone ever heard of someone being denied by Aetna Insurance (or others) for losing too much weight BEFORE surgery?

The surgeon said qualification is based on your weight on the day you first meet with him and enroll in the process, not your weight at the time of surgery,....but wanted to know if anyone has heard otherwise?

I have never heard of anyone being turned down because they lost too much weight prior to surgery. Your weight is turned into insurance like your doctor said "at time that you meet with him to begin this process" Once the insurance approves, based on the weight the doctor turns in (your surgeon)....is what the insurance works with.....I have never heard of them contacting your surgeon's office to see how much you weight prior to surgery.......once they approve.....that's it!!! Hope this helps a little bit.

I would check with Aetna just to be sure. I have heard of insurance companies penalizing people for falling below 40 BMI on the pre-op diet. They really shouldn't but if insurance requires that diet then they will have records and will know your final weight.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
