oct 20 08 and 4 day post op

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am 4 days post op and about 1 hour ago I could actually say I felt good. I have a few questions that I hope I can get some feedback on.

1. I woke up from surgery with pain in my left shoulder. Nurses stated it was gas, the morphine in the hospital didn't kill the pain, today I got a little relief but not that much...I am going to call my surg in the morning for his opinion about it because if is wasn't for this one problem I would feel really good. Any body else with this

2. Not loving the liquid diet but I am doing it. No nausua, no vomiting, but no appetite either. Is the no appetite normal.

3. My energy level and enthusiam is low how long did it last for you

4. I am secretly worried that I will never be able to eat again and when I start I will choke on my first bite. Is that a crazy thought?

Other than this I am plugging away. Already back to work and made it through the entire day.

Thanks for your input

:tongue2:

Congrats on your surgery!! I am just almost 5 week postop, so most of that is still very fresh in my mind. Glad to hear you are feeling pretty good. Here are my replies to your post:

1. The pain in your shoulder is gas pain. I found that walking (I tried to do as much as possible), and GAS X strips (life saver). That combo really helped me and after about a day of walking/gas x the gas was minimal since I kept taking it as a preventative.

2. No appetite is fairly normal so soon after surgery. Don't worry, your appetite will increase as your stomach heals.

3. I would say your energy is going to be lower until you are back in the groove of everything and eating more....I don't think I would be concerned, unless you are extremely weak.

4. That is the purpose behind the phased in diet. My Dr had me on Clear liquids 1 week, full liquids 1 week, soft foods 1 week, modified solid food 1 week, then to normal. I have not had any problems, but I have pretty much followed this pretty closely and chewed my food really well before swallowing. Some people try to eat stuff they shouldn't too early and that seems to be the people who have most of the trouble.

Good luck with your journey. I am sure you will do great... Time will fly too!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
