To tell or not to tell????

Recommended Posts

Ok here's my drama. I'm a 31 year old woman, married with 2 children. I weigh in at 257lbs. I have been overweight my whole life and obese the last 13 years. I am having lapband the 22nd. I just told my mother. She was very upset. She doesnt think "you're not that big". Hello!!!!! I am seriously considering telling NO ONE else. Not even my grandma. WOW!!!! I had hoped my family would be supportive. My husband, my sister and my in-laws are all very supportive. Any suggestions? EEK! Thanks in advance. Kelli

My husband and I talked about it and I decided to only tell my kids and parents. As the weeks went by and friends starting commenting on my weight loss I then proceded to tell them I had lapband. They were all supportive. I have not had anyone that isn't. Not sure if that would have been the case if I had mentioned it before surgery.

When I first did it I only told my husband and daughter. Once I had the surgery and starting losing weight I began telling people and they were all very supportive. However, I have yet to tell my parents or siblings. They will be all "but you weren't that big" and I just don't want to hear skinny people tell me that, they are just being kind because they love me. I say, pick carefully who you tell.

I know what you mean. Before surgery I only told close family & friends. I'm not sure if I will go into detail if people start asking when i lose a large amount. i guess it depends on who. My gradmother doesn't know either. Just because she gets confused & I don't want to explain lol!

I am 4 months post-op and wish I hadn't told several of the people I did - including my parents and grandparents. I am not sure how your family is, but mine spreads this information like wild-fire. Then I started getting calls telling me they heard from Joe-Bob that I needed a certain type of underwear that wouldn't irritate the incisions. It was very embarrassing getting this information from the couple of family members that I did, but even more so when it came from my 75 year old Grandma.

I have already decided that it I have to have adjustments later (PS), I am not telling anyone....learned my lesson.

I have to say that I agree with most of the posters. The more people you tell, the more people you have watching your every mouthful (or not). I didn't want people judging my progress, although its been great.

When people ask me how I am doing it I just say I am eating less. It's been about 6 months and I can go out to eat with friends and no one really even notices how much you eat. You will know when and if it is time to tell someone. Blessing on your journey to good health and a sexy body. Your husband will love it, mine does! :-)

I'm sorry you're having a hard time with your mother. Do you think it's worry? Take your time - tell them when you're ready and on your terms. Maybe make it clear how you feel about the decision up front - "I am really excited that I'm going to take control of my weight and use this great tool...."

Right now my daughter, parents, brother & his wife know. At work my boss, my assistant, and one friend know. Everyone has been very supportive. My boss is even considering it for herself depending on how it works for me.

I don't expect others to be unsupportive. In fact, I'm a little worried that it will make me and my weight the center of attention. That sort of attention has always backfired with me.

Whoever asks me, gets the truth. I am very proud of my band!

I am not saying I'm ashamed of my band at all, I simply don't want to deal with the drama that comes with telling my mama! :tt1: I think many of us have felt the same way. Afterall, who wants to hear from their grandmother what type of underwear to wear after surgery. For some of us, not telling certain people makes it easier for us and I think that is OK.

I have only told a few people....my significant other (obviously), my mother (who is supportive), my boss and one friend. Nobody else. I have a very close group of girlfriends whom I adore...we all love one another...but I brought up lap band about a year ago after I attended the seminar and the backlash was outrageous. I am the heaviest one in our group and it was almost like they were threatened at the idea. I have never had them be so UNsupportive about something ever. So they don't get to know now that I am going to pull the trigger and do it. This is a scary enough, intense enough decision without negative people planting ill-founded doubt in your head. If it was as simple as "put the fork down", none of us would be here in the first place.

AWWW Thanks so much for all this support. When I wrote this post last night, I was still crying. I know I want this and I know I want to do this. My mom says she'll be supportive, "I am just scared for you". I've tried explaining to her that it outpatient/laproscopic and to look in lapband.com for more information. Now she wants to know if she can come up the day of the surgery. My hubby says he thinks she would only make me more nervous. What do you all think? Thanks again Lapbandtalk family. Kelli

Kelli - I am so glad your mother admitted her lack of support was born of fear. That I can understand.

If I had a family member whose presence was going to make me even more nervous than I am, I think I would ask them politely not to come.

I'm doing it the opposite way - everyone is coming! My mother & daughter are coming up tonight with me. My father & brother are driving up tomorrow. It's going to be like one big family reunion with me laying there in a hospital gown. I may have to rethink this quickly.

Best of luck.

I told only a few, hubby, sister, mother and only one coworker. Did not want to hear the negative stuff. I hear some of that from my hubby when we first talked about it and my mother. I think it is much better to let them see the results. Then tell them about the new tool I have for losing weight. There was another lady at work that had the bypass 2-3 years prior. she ios back to eating the way she did before. She spends 1.5 hours in our breakroom/kitchen eating everyday. SHe lost about 200 lbs. At this rate she will be one of those that puts it back on. I don't think she does any support meetings anymore. She ask me about websites. I sent her a link to one that has the 5-day pouch test. It resets the pouch for the Gastric bypass people.. The lap band surgery is not as invasive as any of the WLs were in the past. The biggest thing to the Band is getting your mind right to deal with it and learn to use your tool. Sometime it is very hard to restrain yourself and you make the "bad food choices". Hopefully we learn from these.

I would keep the secret and smile when someone asks!!:tt1:

I think you are totally within your rights to tell her that you would love to have her there if she is going to be positive about the experience, but that you yourself are afraid and you don't have it in you to support her fear as well. That you believe this will lead to a healthier, LONGER life for you...those were the words that really konked my own mother over the head.

I think you should let your Mom be there but only if she completely understands that she is there to SUPPORT YOU, not to sooth her own anxiety by being present as it happens. And if she says she can't do that or if you think by her past behavior that she can't take her own psychological angst out of the equation, you'd be better off talking to her when you get home.

I am glad the OP started this thread! I decided early on (and I am still pre-seminar) not to tell anyone but my husband. I am considering telling my best friend but still not sure. Definitely no one (and I mean NO one) at work...this kind of thing would become the office joke.

My question to folks who didn't tell anyone, how did you explain your surgery and how long were you really "down" from it? I had my gallbladder taken out through lap surgery years ago and took a week off work for it. I was thinking about the same.

I just hope I'll be eligible. I am at 35bmi but just barely. I do have to comorbidities though - arthritis in the spine, cholestoral meds, irregular heart beat meds and a strong family history of heart attacks. The last visit I had with my doctor in August he put me on xenical...but it really just didn't work. Alli did work for a while but would start and stop in spurts. I hope that will qualify me. I realize this is a BIG step but I really do want to improve my health and be young enough to enjoy it!!!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
