Need info on liquids, protein, etc.

Recommended Posts

My surgery is scheduled for October 9th. I was supposed to have gastric by-pass but due to a problem with my stomach, my doctor said it would not be wise; thus, banding is my next option. I had done extensive research on the bypass but find myself coming up short on info on banding. What liquids should I have on hand when I come home from the hospital and what is the best Protein mix to use. I would like something that taste good. I need to lose 70 to 80 lbs according to my doc. I am 62 years old and in need of much better health.

Hi Jet, and welcome to LBT.

Have you met with your doctor's nutritionist, or do you have an appointment pending? I had very detailed lists of what I needed to have on hand pre and post op. Doctors vary widely on their dietary requirements. I'd be happy to let you know what my diet entailed, but chances are it would be completely different from your doctor would recommend.

Hello Jet919 let me first start off by saying congrad on getting a surgery date. you go in 1 day before my birthday and 2weeks before my surgery. secondly everyone i different depending on the Dr. with mines i was given a lsit of things i will be able to have from week 1 all the way up until i get my first fill. the nutrionist i was seeing also provided me with a similar list. it's mainly Water, crystal light, 100 % fruit juices, chicken broth. they consider Clear Liquids as anything you can see through. not sure about whey powder(protein shakes) right out of the hospital but my Dr. did say if i had any (pre-op diet drink) Optifast left over i can drink that. now they do sell Protein Powder at Walmart, GNC, etc. but make sure you can have it first. and if so i found that the vanilla Flavor with Vanilla Silk(soy milk) is surprisingly good:thumbup:.

P.S I forgot icepops (sugar free), Jello and pudding BUT PLEASE CHECK WITH YOU DOCTOR FIRST. EVERYBODY'S CASE IS DIFFERENT !

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
