Bye bye band!

Recommended Posts

Well just posting to say I had my band removed today laparoscopically. They basically are parallel incisions to the old ones, still five and I must say it went smoother than I even expected. Natch there's a bit of pain but not as bad as when they put it in, meaning the gas pains, port removal site seems to be the worse of them but still happy it was all outpatient and didn't have to spend the night in the hospital!!! Yippee skippee! Anywho I may tuck in every once if you don't mind. Funny thing was I had some apple juice in the day surgery room and on the ride home my stomach was making growling signs and I said to my husband "did you hear that? my stomach is back!" OK I guess you had to be there but it was funny at the time. Thanks for all the support I've gotten here, Nancy.:)

Have you reached goal? Will you put the band back in later or do another type of surgery?

No, right now the goal was getting the band out, lol. I'm not revising, I know this may seem very odd to most people here but I learned a lot about myself during this 13 month journey and I'm trying not to focus on "dieting" but just to be healthy. The band was not helping me in that department and so the removal was the best thing for "me". I actually put on weight in the beginning after my pre-op diet and have come down some now and just really want to get back to walking again and fitting into my pre-op (lap band) jeans although they are not styling anymore but you know what I mean.

I was going to get the RNY like my daughter who is proud to have lost 120 lbs since April but I chickened out and got the lap band. But at this point I do not want to have that surgery or any other type of WLS after giving it much thought and discussion with my family and doctors. Thanks Nancy:smile:

Nanook - It sounds like you made the right decision for you. You sounds happy and relieved. Like GG - we haven't always agreed on everything - but I have always respected your opinion and I do wish you the best. Take care of yourself!

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. I think I went through an angry/frustrated phase because it didn't work for me like it did for everyone else. Thought things would be different but I'm glad to have it out now. Good luck to you both! Nancy.:crying:

Hey, you gotta do whatever makes you happy! As I've said before, don't let anybody on the internet drag you down....although I do believe that most of us here wish you well. Good luck, homie!

Hello everyone! I am new here. I have the lap band. I got it in Mexico on July 7th 2007. I lost some weight at first(15lbs), but I am back up again. It is not working for me at all. There are things I can't eat....So I eat the things I can and too much of it:bored:. And the Doc. says it has slipped slightly so it is not working properly. I need a stronger tool. I am in the process of getting the band removed and changing to the gastric bypass. Do you think I am doing the right thing?? Tell me what you think. I am happy for you Nanook. Do whatever makes you happy. I know what it is like to live with the band and not have good results. It's really annoying and you feel like a failure. AND it's always on your mind... We are both just still trying to figure out what will work best for us! Much support, Kaeleen

Sorry I can't in good conscious tell you to go for another surgery for weight loss. You'll have to get that from someone else here on line but good luck to you and hope you feel better soon, Nancy.:)

Hi Alaska~~Im kinda new too...I actually am going for the gastric right now havent made mind up 100% but I can gurantee u that at first I was full force into the band no gastric at all...but after hearing how hurt some others are after not succeeding w/ it were and seeing how many people had band slippage it swayed me alot so I signed onto a gastric forum well technically its for both Thinnertimes.com And the forums there are overflowing w/ info about it and once saw peoples success stories and some brought me to tears and actually I guess like people say your spouse is your better half...my hubby was reluctant to agree w/ the band he felt i would give up and it wouldnt give me the results I wanted so that would be another failed weight loss attempt. But honestly thats all I can say Im not gonna dare tell you which to get...I actually finalize everything for myself monday and get my surg date so then I will say 100% that im getting the rny performed rather than the band. I hope this helped u!! Take care all

I'm having my band removed Thursday after only 5 weeks! I have been absolutely miserable and can't live my life like this. If you're still getting these emails I would love to know how you feel now. I want to feel like myself again!

Sue,

When I posted there, in 10/08 I had just gone through a frustrating 14 months of living with the band and having issues the main one never losing weight with it. It just wasn't the right procedure for me. I had it removed and lost a bit of weight at first because I could eat normal foods which included healthier ones. Since then I gained a lot of weight as my stomach went back to its old size again and I have since revised to RNY on 6/11.

This time it's working and after about a week post-op the weight just started coming off. I can't eat like I used to and can't eat through the RNY like you can with the band. Once you're full, you're full! I know no WLS is perfect and they aren't always as effective as they were in the beginning but at least I can say I'm losing this time!

Anyway good luck to you, you will make the decision that is right for you whether you're band-free and doing it on your own or you decide to revise to another procedure. Take care, Nancy.:(

SueBB,

I'm another one like Nanook who had their Band removed, and moved to another form of WLS.....one that WORKS for me.

Keep the faith....there IS life after the band. It is possible (likely, in fact) that you were given bad information about what WLS would be right for you. It's not a Buffet where you just choose the one you want; you need to choose the one that will WORK for you, and one every procedure will work for every person.

So don't give up. There IS an answer. Nanook has found hers; I have found mine, and you will very likely find yours as well.

We're all here to answer any questions you might have!

HH :tongue_smilie:

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
