Am I being mean and rude?

Recommended Posts

I will be getting the band in November <fingers crossed> if all goes to plan. I am 31 years old, 6' 1" weigh 300lbs. My goal is to lose about 100lbs. My beautiful wife and mother of my 3 children is also 31 years old. Still looks beautiful but like many other women after giving birth has gained weight. She is 5' 9" and weighs 200lbs. Here is where I feel I maybe stuck my foot in my mouth and was rude to her but it was not my intention. I suggested that she also have the lap band done so we can take this journey together. Of course she was not very happy about that. I mean we have been together since we were 14, I have seen here at 18 when she had an AMAZING BODY :smile2: but at age 25 when we had our first child she started to pack on the pounds. She says she wants to lose it on her own but we have both tried that. I don't know......maybe men just don't get women sometimes..... HELP!!!

yup you put your foot in your mouth. Your wife would not even qualify for LB at her weight.

dang I am always doing that. But after 17 years of being together I guess she gave me a pass. I didn't do it out of malice. Just want her to be healthy.

Your BMI is 39.6 Hers is 29.5 Big difference. Is she UNhealthy?

If she isn't, your reasoning is a little bogus. You may owe her an apology!

She has no medical conditions, but she, like me, is lethargic always exhausted and just "unhealthy". I did apologize but she, like me, has to lose weight. Heart disease in women is a huge problem. I want her around forever with me. she is the love of my life, only woman I have ever loved and been with. 9/24/91 is our 17 year anniversary since we were 14 years old.

If you have 3 young children that may be why she's tired! LOL but talk to her and tell her what you've told us. As MY husband would say, can't hurt, might help!

She'll probably lose weight as you do just because she'll have to change her cooking to accommodate your band. (or if you do the cooking, you'll change.) Plus, as you start being more active, she may join you.

Even if she qualified for the band, in order to work it would have to be something she wanted for herself.

I understand your concern for her health. I agree with MacMadame that with your lifestyle change maybe she will be able to get on a healthier track.

Weight is just a very sensitive subject for women and so you guys need to tread VERY lightly when going there! Encourage the healthy lifestyle and the weight loss should follow.

There are so many possible reasons that people put on weight. Over eating, lack of exercise, medical conditions.. the list goes on.

I had a similar start point to you in terms of weight. My wife has also lost some weight as I have, without making the conscious effort to do so. My family have been wonderfully supportive on my journey. She certainly didn't need to lose weight, but says that she feels better for doing so.

Although your sentiment is worthy, you may have gone about it in the wrong way. If she is not unhealthy, has a normal range BMI, exercises etc, then I think leave her be. The motivation for losing weight has to come from the person him/her self.

Ya..you did...you stuck your foot in your mouth. I got one of those husbands too. But not to worry, after being together for so long she should know you and know what you meant.

I too have been with my husband since I was 14 and he was 15...we're celebrating out our 26th wedding anniversary in December and three kids, so all together we've been together for over 30 years. We're both overweight, and although he has supported me 100% in this choice, the choice is still mine. I would love for him to do this too, but he needs to be ready and by me opening my big mouth and trying to pressure him, it would only aggrevate him. She, as you, need to do this on her own accord. But if she feels strong enough that she can do it on her own just with diet and WITH YOU, then let her do it. Your experiencing it TOGETHER in a different way. I know my husband is looking forward to the diet part as he's going to eat as I do, just a little more of it. Surgery isn't for everybody.

Not to worry...just buy her flowers, jewellery, a car...whatever...men just need to think before they speak sometimes.....sheeesh.

Oh yes you are. Fortunately, she's forgiven you.

As you begin to lose weight, hopefully, you will spend more time playing with the kids and helping out with them. This will give her more time for herself and possibly energize her to be more active too.

I would suggest that at some point you start encouraging activities the family can participate in...without forcing your wife to join you. Also, cook in a healthy way for the family. If you don't already share in the cooking...start (take a class if you need to...or a couples class if you can find one!). Many diabetic centers or hospitals will offer healthy cooking classes.

Enjoy your experience...but don't throw it in her face.

I have not yet been banded--Oct. 22nd--my dh is over 100 lbs overweight too and I feel he will benefit from MY experience. I have four kids and we've been married for 23 years (married at 17). I was NOT overweight until my marriage and tried to keep up with my dh who was an athlete at the time. Now he is rarely active but we both still overeat.

Those are the kinds of things you need to be telling her not "you need to have the surgery too (ie. you fatty). Most women are VERY sensitive to weight related comments (even the skinny women). Most have gotten the visual from practically everywhere (life, tv, print ads, etc.) that "the perfect body" is some rail thin version. I know some women have things figured out but, most will always have some sort of body image issues. Especially if that is something they have struggled with in the past.

Just tell her you love her and want her to be healthy and active and around for you and the kids for a long long time.

Yes you really put your foot in your mouth, and gave your wife a kick too. I was in great shape when I was 18 too, after having three kids I put on the wieght. My husband never said anything like that to me. She is going to have to do it on her time she will some day. but when you said that I bet she thinks you don't like her body anymore.

My husband is very thin. He knows how you can get hurt by names too, but from the end of being really thin. We have been married for 27 years and love each other for the way we are. But I'm the one that wants a band. He is behind me all the way.

Yup, I made the same mistake. I told my sister that I am getting the Lapband. She said great! I then told her that maybe we should do it together......she sarcastically replied "I DON'T NEED THAT!"

She really does.......she is waaaaay overweight...

Need to becareful when suggesting others are fat! Some people are in complete denial!

Don't feel bad... if you've been together for that long I'm sure you've done a lot of things as a couple. You probably figured why shouldn't losing weight be any different. But you know what getting the Lap Band is something that an individual has to want for themselves. You probably came to the decision that you wanted the Lap Band and this is the tool that would help you on your journey. Well she believes she can do it herself. Be her support just like you want her to be your support. Make her believe that she can do it herself. If she doesn't succeed on her own then at least you can be an example of how the Lap Band can be an helpful tool in losing weight. JUST BE THAT SUPPORTIVE HUSBAND AND HAVE FUN EXERCISING AND EATING RIGHT TOGETHER! YEEEAAAH!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
