Port change...?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone...

I am at goal (and a bit beyond my original goal of 150) and saw my surgeon today for my 2 year band-anniversary. My port is protruding quite a bit, and I told him that is the only thing that bothers me some, but can certainly live with it if it is my tool for life to keep me at my goal weight...

He suggested we change the port, as there is now a "flat" port, and they can fit me in next Wednesday!

Anyone ever do this??

THanks!

Sherry

Not yet! But I asked my doc about it and he said that once I'd lost enough to need it he would be pleased and priviledged to give me a low profile port! Congrats to you! :tt1:

Is changing the port a whole other surgery? Would that procedure be "cosmetic?"

No, because he wrote that it "protrudes, is sore at times, and irritates my skin". :-) Plus, it is a quick procedure where it is just done in a 'treatment' room and I wont be put completely under and will go home within a couple of hours.

I had such an easy time with my surgery (surgery was Monday, back to work on Wednesday), that I hope the same goes with this one!!

I've thought about it, but my scar is nearly invisible now. I dont want a new one!

Hi Jacqui

I can see my port scar some and unfortunately I have a little 'tummy' area that 1000 sit-ups a night wont cure that I think I would rather have another little scar than the bit of a "bulge" you can see now when I wear a tighter shirt or have on my bathing suit. I can totally understand your thoughts though!

Sherry

P.S. You were such an inspiration to me when i first started on my journey and couldnt wait to get to the point where you were when i first started! Congrats!

Thanks for that info, SherryA! I plan on needing a smaller one some day; it's nice to know it won't be a whole new surgery to get it! :tt1:

No problem...When he first said it, my initial reaction was "oh, i can live with this if i have to", but then when i asked some more questions about it and realized it should be something fairly easy I was all for it!!

Good luck to you!

Eventhough this thread is pretty old, I wanted to ask those of you who had the lower profile port change. The doctor never told me the regular one would show so much and that a lower profile was even available before I had the surgery. I'm at the point where I'm at least confident to go to the beach and swim without my shirt on but the port shows so much that it would be just as embarrassing as when I had a huge belly.

Anyways, my question is simply is the lower profile port change covered under your insurance for those of you who had it? I have a partial PPO insurance which covers max out of pocket of $7500, but even a year after the surgery I'm still receiving bills from different sources and it's cost me about $10,000. If I do this port change I'm afraid there would be even more hidden fees. Please let me know. Thanks

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
