New and a little worried

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to say hi to everyone. I don't have a surgery date yet nor do I have a specific doctor. I am waiting on insurance to get back to me. I am a little worried that I won't be able to stick to the diet after the surgery. I have a real weekness for sweets although I have gotten better than I was. I am working on a list of things the nutritionist gave me to work on before surgery, but I am just not sure I will be stong wnough to make such a huge change to my eating habits. Does anyone regret having the surgery?

Hi there!

I am not yet banded, but my doctor told us that if you are a real sweet eater then the band might not be for you and you might want to look into the gastric bypass. Refined sugars pass right down the band. Good luck though!

I haven't been banded yet either, my friend was banded 08/04/08 and I asked her about the sweet and carb cravings. She said once you ween yourself off them your craving decrease or pretty much go away. I sure hope so, I love sweets but can live without them.

Good luck to you.

Hmm...I know my love of carbs didn't go away when I did Atkins. I don't know that I craved them, per se, but I still LIKED them.

So I have to say I agree...sweets (like candy, Cookies, ice cream) go down fast and easy. They are called "slider" foods. At least with the band you CAN have them IN MODERATION as part of a healthy diet. With GBS you may NEVER be able to eat them because they can give you diahrrea and what sounds like a panic attack...racy heart, sweating, etc.

So you have to decide...would you rather give them up except for special occasions? OR never have them? I'd rather have cake only on my birthday than never, or a few Cookies at Christmas than never, but that's just me. It is a serious question and only you know your self control.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
