BMI charts are crap...

Recommended Posts

sooo... i recently went to the doctors and they did this test on me... they put a sticky bandage on my arm and my foot and found out how much Water was in my body, how much of my weight is fat and how much is muscle and gave me a weight that i should be at according to my body structure and muscle mass... and when the reading came out, it said that according to my specific body, my healthy weight would be 196 pounds. Im a pretty tall girl, and my entire family is naturally a little big boned.. so it made me think about those charts where u find out how much "your supposed to weigh" according to your height... and how wrong they were... it made me feel pretty good because now i dont feel like i need to fit into this chart , which i thought would be too skinny for me anyways... just letting you guys all know because if any of you were feeling like me.. ask your doctor to do a body composition test.. is what i think its called... its more personal and accurate for YOUR body

I wouldn't say BMI charts are crap. They work as intended as a general guideline for the average person. Of course there are plenty of people that are not average, but for a rough estimate it works fine.

However, I definitely agree the body composition test is a much better way of finding a true goal of where to be. BMI can never take bone structure or muscle mass into consideration.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
