Can you take prednisone/ibuprofen and get a band put in?

Recommended Posts

I am at the beginning stages here and haven't had a consultation yet (went to a seminar the other night and going to one Tuesday) so I am concerned my meds might rule me out for some reason.

I have arthritis and take 5mg prednisone daily, and take anywhere from 400-800mg ibuprofen daily. I have tried to get lower on the pred and right now it's not happening. I really believe I could go w/o the ibuprofen if I had some weight off of me but all bets are off when it comes to prednisone. :lovechoc:

I know I'd probably need to avoid ibuprofen before surgery but my ? is can it and pred be taken once banded?

i do not know about prednisone, but my doc says no to ibuprophen as it will sit in your new stomach and can cause an ulcer, etc. He recommends tylenol as it has no gastric side effects. hope this helps.

I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and take Remicade and Methotrexate along with ibuporfen. I had to stop all three for two weeks before and two weeks after I had the lapband put in. I have taken prednisone in the past and I’m sure you would have to stop that for sometime before and after because like Remicade and Methotrexate it suppress your immune system. You will have to check with your doctor, but I don’t think it will stop you from getting the lapband….you will just have to deal with the pain for a little while in order to get it done. I took Darvect up to the day I had surgery.

Can you take liquid ibuprofen, meaning children's liquid and just take an adult dose? I can possibly go w/o ibuprofen but prednisone... ughh... I cannot get off the 5mg I take no matter how slowly I do it.

I have RA and I take prednisone... which my doctor didn't have a problem with (some do). He preferred that I didn't take Daypro, which is a NSAID too. He said if I had to continue with Daypro to break in in half and take it while I am eating so it would be sandwiched between food.

I am not sure about the liquid stuff.

I did find that once I went of the low-carb diet and dropped all bread and other white stuff that I didn't need the Daypro anymore and I lowered the dose of prednisone from 5 mg to 2-3 mg a day. Maybe you would have the same results!

1000words, thanks for the reply. That is encouraging. I can definitely take my ibuprofen with meals that is no problem at all. :) I'll just have to talk with my surgeon (whoever that ends up being LOL) and work that out.

I have been trying to wean from prednisone for almost a year now. I am down to 5mg but can't get off it. I know when I lose this weight that will go a long way to helping me function without it and you just confirmed it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
