I'm in my second day of the liquid diet. I feel ok a little tired and have a slight headache. Kind of getting nervous since my surgery is a little over a week away. I haven't had any queeziness like you speak of. I've been drinking Crystal light non-stop and try to get the other things I can have every two hours. It's tough at work, because every morning, my crew at work has Breakfast together. I've had to pass up on it the past two mornings and I think my buddies are starting to think I don't like them. haha. but they'll be alright. goood luck to you.

I'm so sorry to hear that you're feeling sick, Kristie. Are you allowed to try some different brands of shakes? I'll have to admit that my two week pre-op diet allows for some real food, but the shakes are very good too.

I've had:

Boost Diabetic (choc, straw, vanilla)

Carnation Instant Breakfast Carb Conscious (choc) in the blue bottles

powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury powder mixed with ice cold skim milk (chock, vanilla, strawberry)

Good luck, and I hope you're feeling a lot better today.

Im on day 2 as well. I feel kinda pukey too. Im doing slim fast and Im not really sure how im gonna do this for 2 more weeks. Luckily, I can have a small salad with lunch and dinner. The headache is not as bad today. Hope these 2 weeks go by quickly cause slim fast is yucky! I feel like everything suggested to me for the pre op diet has been sickly sweet....anyone with me??? Im gonna get some broth and put unfavored Unjury in it at night as a substitute for one of the FIVE slim fasts I am supposed to drink a day. Gag!

I told someone yesterday...I also two weeks pre-op. I am allowed to have mashed potatoes and eggs with cheese and salsa. Just have to keep my cal. around 1000. Check with your doctor, you may be allowed to do the same. It doesn't seem as bad then. Good luck...

I didn't get nauseous before surgery, but after surger, when I tried a certain flavor of GNC whey Protein powder, I did get a nauseous feeling (nothing happened thank God). This happened twice after drinking the same flavor. I think there are some ingredients in certain flavors I cannot stomach. You might think about changing flavors or brands. Definitely don't invest in a huge canister of that stuff without testing its flavor and seeing how you respond to it. I've got a lot of money invested in whey Protein that I'll never use. Generally, I love GNC Whey Protein Powder, just that one flavor caused a problem.

Hope you get to feeling better.

I'll tell you why you feel like crap, because the pre-op liquid diet is a stupid sham of a diet that doctors shouldn't even be using anymore!!

you feel this way because it isn't normal to survive on liquids for two or three weeks.. your body is starving itself and it causes severe headaches, you can't think straight and you feel naceous..

I just want to slap the doctors that make their patients do this. It's not needed. You can be on a phase one southbeach diet, which will shrink your liver and you will lose 10-13 pounds in the first 10-14 days. And you can eat grilled chicken, blackeyed peas, peanuts, low fat string cheese and stuff like this.. you learn to eat right and your body isn't starving itself.. no headaches..

Don't be surprised if you want to run out and eat a pizza or cheeseburger here in a few days. If that happens, eat a can of tuna or a piece of grilled chicken..

I rant about this all the time, and I will continue to rant about it, cuz it's old school BS...

PS: those nasty Protein shakes are another joke. If you are at a proper fill level, you won't need to survive on shakes. In the beginning right after being banded you will have to do liquids because you are swelled and I can understand that, but after all that swelling goes down and you are back to eating normal foods again, there wont' be any need for nasty shakes. You should be able to get your Protein in just fine if you do this band right and not get too tight.

It doesn't sound like you are consuming enough calories. The key is to shrink your fatty liver not starve you to death. You can achieve that in other ways other than just drinking meals. Try Medifast or Optifast; although they're not the best tasting, it's food that you can eat. That's what my Dr. puts his patients on and you can have 5-6 servings per day. I have never exceeded that because I can have unlimited amounts of sugar free popcicles, Jello and broth. Good luck to you.

hey guys, thank you so much for the responses. =/

well, i cried myself to sleep LOL. i usually only cry when frustrated so i don't know if it was pain or frustration over pain. >

BUT, here is the story...

i am going to St. Joseph's hospital and the cooridnators, dietitian, etc...they chose this one brand because of the ingredients, i guess? they said it would be the best for their program, and we had to buy it.

$150 for 2 weeks. so that will eventually become $300 for the liquid diet.

it's 600 calories a day. (200 per...meal.)

no...food.

i've had slimfast and some other stuff before.........i thought that was bad...but it was just a lack of my attention you know? ...like...why have that crap when i can have food? lol. i was young. so i just blew it off.

BUT THIS.........HOLY WOW. we had to buy it. not knowing what anything tasted like...annnnnnnd i picked a box of what the lady said "everyone loves this one" ..pineapple-apricot? and after every sip...

no joke...i said "oh God." because...i couln't take it lol.

anyways, here is the label.

the front of the box says "must be under physician supervision if using under 800 calories per day" lol.

i'm at the point where i am fearing my next meal...right now. i'd rather post on the forum. LOL. it's been ONE DAY. this will be my breakfast...my 4th meal. how many more to go? lol. *scream*

No wonder you're ready to scream. I can't imagine that diet for two solid weeks. A few days maybe, but not that long. I also noticed that you are getting no dietary Fiber. I just don't understand how those shakes alone could be healthy over a two week period. I like what health4life said, "The key is to shrink your fatty liver not starve you to death." On top of that, you can't even stand the thought of drinking the shakes.

My doctor said he and the office staff went on the prescribed pre-op diet for a two week period. If your doctor had done the same, I think he would have allowed for more nourishment.

If you continue to feel sick today, I would call the doctor's office.

the sad fact is that this is what they "prescribed" but...i am going to call and "verify" that it's ok that i skip meals once in a while because i'd rather be "hungry" than sick. (hopefully she will have a better solution though)

yeah, i wish they would have tested them, after reading that they sounded good, they would have noticed that was the only good part lol.

Can you have other liquids?

Perhaps some clear broth? something that would add a bit of nutrition without adding fat or carbs.

I haven't started my pre-op diet yet, but back in high school I did medi-fast for 3 months. (5 shakes per day...NO food.) so I feel your pain!

Did your docs office offer any recipes to try with their prescribed shakes? ? Maybe someone has figured out a good way to mix it?

i left a msg with the dietitian, so i am wondering about it. if it comes down to it, i have decided to take all of your lovely advices and sub out the meals i can't stand, for the suggestions here. lol. call it "cheating" by their book, i don't care LOL. i will still be on liquids, just as long as they taste better than what i have, so i can ingest them.

 so thank you, for all the advice and now i wait and see if the dietitian is mad at me? lol.

Kristy~ I was thinking about you yesterday as I started my own pre-op diet and became queasy by late evening (and I am allowed some food!)

How are you doing now that you've been on it a few days? Any better?

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

      3. Doughgurl

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
