How long after your surgery did you go back to work?

Recommended Posts

I was banded Wed 8/13/08 and I was back to work Sun night 8/17/08. I am a pediatric home care nurse and most of the night my patient is asleep and I just have to check his ventilator. In the morning I have to get him ready which involves trach and gtube care etc. I don't have to do any heavy lifting or anything. I was a little sore after the frist 2 nights just from the bending and twisting, but nothing intolerable.

Wow a lot of teachers on here. I, too, teach. I was banded on Monday the 18th. I have to attend a 4 hour meeting tomorrow, 5 days out and teach Monday, 1 week out. I teach at a college and I teach morning and night classes 3 days a week which has me there 8am until 10 pm so I am a little anxious about my ability to handle it. Hearing these stories was encouraging!!!!

Just take it easy. You will probably be worn out at the end of the day.

I went back for a few meetings the first week. Was fine. I went back full time 12 hour shift as a nurse in the hosp. The first day was harder than I expected. The twisting and constant movement. I had a hiatal hernia repair as well and that is was difficult. My port felt abit sore but fine. My diaphram felt like I had done 1000 crunches. Was much better the next day. LM:thumbup:

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
