UHC, kinda scared, in Central Tx

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am in Central Texas. I have been lurking around here for about a year and have decided to go ahead and take the plunge.

I just talked to my insurance United Health Care, and I am covered for bariatric surgery. They said my doc just need to submit plans, and they will let me know what hoops I have to jump through (not exactly those words....lol)

I have to be honest, the side effect of death has me kind of buggy. I have 4 children, 3 under 10, and I don't want to do something that will leave them without a Mom. This is the only thing keeping me on the fence.

Any insight?

Angie:eek:

Angie - We all know that there is always a risk of death with any kind of surgery, but the risk is really low. I would be shocked if we all did not have a scary thought or two before surgery. If this were gastric, I would be more nervous for you. Lapband, you'll be fine. It is the best thing I ever did for myself and my family. I am a 100% believer in the band. I do think you have to watch what you eat and exercise to get the best results. Be a rule follower and you will be fine. Those kiddos will thank you for it when you have lost the weight and you can keep up with them.

death is a risk for any major surgery but it is very rare and unlikely. I have had 11 surgeries and everytime I get the warning. as long as you follow your docs instructions you should be fine. it is a very scary thing the first few times you have surgery but with the lap band it is worth the risk. because if you don't do something to help you lose the weight your cutting years off your life by being obese.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
