Heavy and lengthy menstrual cycle after banding?

Recommended Posts

I have never really had "issues" with my cycle until after i got banded. I am being told by doctor's it is from the fast weight loss - explained as "when fat is removed by the body, which is where most estrogen is stored, the estrogen is released into your body elsewhere signaling your uterus to bleed" ... are there any medically knowledged people out there or anyone else who has experienced this.. i feel like there is no end in sight and i cannot function normally at home or work most days because of it .. bleh!!

I started spotting a few days after surgery  I was due for my period last Friday and I thought maybe it wasn't coming, but it arrived today very unhappy  I am crampy and can't take advil.. I hope when this is done the spotting stops too.. My periods always get weird when I lose weight.. You are not alone

Before I had my hystorectomy, if I lost weight fast I would start early and have heavier cycles. So yes, what your doctor has said makes sense to me.

Yes this to happened to me i had my period a week before surgery and was upset when two days after surgery i was on it again and then i was on it for like a month. My doctor says its from the trama your body goes threw with the surgery and thats its normal and it will regulate itself. And mine did that. after about three months now its normal.

In my case, when I've lost weight, my periods actually got lighter. Of course the most I've ever lost at one time is 25 lbs over 3 months.

Good Question!!! Here's the medical reason in a nutshell.

Fat affects estrogen, which is a female hormone. When you lose fat, your bodies hormone levels naturally change. When you lose fat FAST, your hormones go out of whack. It's ok, and it will eventually even out, especially once you hit your sweet spot and start losing at a steadier rate.

About 9 months after surgery I started having issues with monthly pain on using my bowels and backpain started then too. I never had heavy periods but they got heavier, for me. I also hadnt had period pain or PMT since before I had my first baby and that all started again.

Turns out I've developed endometriosis (have it on my sciatic nerve too). Probably sparked by weight loss to a degree but we have a very strong family history of it also, turns out I didnt entirely escape it.

It *could* be a coincidence too though, at 40, my cycles are bound to start changing sooner or later.

Thank goodness it struck me at 38, AFTER I'd had all the babies I wanted!

Thank you all for responding... i sure hope it goes back to normal before i hit my sweet spot.. my surgeon thinks it will take me 5-6 fills before i hit it ... and since there's only 1 fill every month, geeeez... i hope it doesn't take 5-6 months to straighten back out ... i am glad there may be an end in sight, but that's an awful long time before then ... grrrr... the things we sacrifice! hahaha ... i would rather be thin than have normal cycles though, i guess ... i don't have any kiddo's yet so the docs don't really want to do a hysterectomy, although that's what i feel like begging for about right now. i'll hang in there

Did you gain a lot of weight after your hysterectomy?

Well, i don't know if this is good news or bad news, but i saw my gyno today and i am going under the knife within the next few days to help correct this bleeding problem .. i am very nervous about it since i was just banded less than 3 wks ago... so they are going to do a D&C ... i just want to feel better so i can exercise and get to feeling "normal" again and focus on something other than gyno problems .. i have a full, happy life to look forward to but have not been able to because of this ... sigh~

I'm sorry Lafroga. Hopefully this will fix the problem and you'll get your energy back.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
