Blood tests on the low side, anyone else?

Recommended Posts

I had my yearly physical and PAP last week and my doc ordered the regular blood tests, sugar, cholesterol, thyroid, etc. The nurse called me this morning and said that my Vitamin B12 was on the low side as well as my Iron levels and that my doc wanted me to start on OTC supplements. Both levels were all still in the normal range but at the very low side of normal. I know that it is because of the weight loss but I am wondering if this is the norm with Lap Band patients at this point. I am seeing my surgeon tomorrow and plan on asking him what his thoughts are on this. Has anyone else heard this from their doc?

Both my Iron and B12 were in the bottom third of the normal range. B12 was 370 and Ferritin was 78. Pretty sure the ferritin is the Iron.

I also take daily supplements but it's still on the low side. Think it's the nature of the band.

Low Iron is quite "normal" for all women of childbearing age anyway.

My bloods after a year were fine bar for the Iron, that was right down at the bottom of normal. I take an iron/b12/folate supplement in one pill, a good Multivitamin and fish oil. I am thinking of adding Calcium too but want to find a chewable, which is hard in Australia.

I don't get my blood tested for a couple of weeks but my doctor requires additional B-12 suppliments (I take 500 mcg, sublingual daily) I also take an Iron suppliment because I have a history of anemia and my hemotologist recommends the iron suppliments. I also take bariatric chewable Vitamins that have extra iron and b-12. I get the iron tested every six months because that can build up if you have too much but b-12 is Water soluable and excess is passed on through the body.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
