Medication and the band

Recommended Posts

I have a question about medication and the band. I take effexor xr which is a capsule and it is the extended release. I can not break it in half, and i am not sure if it is to big to take after the band. I can not just stop taking. Anybody have any experience with this. ????:confused2:

I take Effexor XR and I just take it as usual after my surgery. There have been no problems.

The thing that makes your XR slow release is that the coating on the inside parts are different so they break down at different rates. If you cannot swallow the capsule, (I wouldn't try it for the first week or so, because of the swelling) just open it and mix the stuff into applesauce or some other food. You can pour out the capsule on your tongue if you like, then just wash it down. There shouldn't be any flavor because the balls are coated.

I take Effexor XR as well, so I went and talked to the pharmacist about the best way to take them. Basically open the capsule and get the contents down somehow - the important thing is not to chew them. So, a sip or two of Water for the first couple of days, and then in something a bit more substantial later. I'm being banded on August 5th, and usually take my pill at night, so I'm going to switch it up and take it that morning, so that at least I have 24 hours after surgery before I have to take it again! Good luck!

I can swallow a big pill.

I've always hated doing so and wont take a huge multi, an Iron pill and 3 ginormous fish oil capsules, I've found chewable options for all of those. But if a pill was my only option, I can do it, they dont block me up or anything.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
