My wife is going to get the lapband this September. I am trying to get all the risks about this procedure. There is one that nobody has answered and maybe somebody has experienced this. Two years ago we came down with food poisioning and had sudden explosive vomiting for two days. What would have happenend if she had the lapband in place?

In the book "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies" on page163 it says "If you vomit, stop eating and drinking until the nausea passes (well DUH). Repetitive vomiting to the point where liquids cannot go down is potentially dangerous. If this occurs, contact your surgeon immediately."

I would imagine that the surgeon would prescribe medication to stop the vomiting (a suppository perhaps?). Really good question that I bet few of us have thought about.

Interestingly enough, I have not had a vomiting virus in over 2 years since I got my band. I have had viruses where I feel ill, and have massive diarrhea, but no vomiting. It's like the band does something to keep me from feeling like I need to puke unless somethging is stuck. Then, WATCH OUT!!!

The band could slip b/c of food poisoning-type vomiting for sure though. Anyone experiencing this might have to have another surgery. It's just a risk you take. My surgery and recovery was so easy that I would not be too bothered by another surgery though. I look and feel so much better that it is a risk I was willing to take.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
