I keep thinking that this too wont work for me....

Recommended Posts

I have had way too much time to think, since I am a student and took the summer off so I could have the surgery and not have to worry about anything but recovering after. Well all this time that I have, has just been no good. I just keep thinking about all the diets I have tried in the past, in the beginning with all of the greatest of intentions, only to get tired of trying and seeing little results and putting on more weight. And I think that I am going to sabatoge myself. On the other hand, I have never had surgery, and I think that it would be absolutely ridiculous to have a WLS to only work against it and eventually have to have it reversed. I am just really scared of failing once again to lose this weight. I think through it all, I am just determined to not fail! If I can make it through a full week of liquids ( after making my fiancee a homemade blueberry cheesecake ice cream cake for his birthday) without cheating, than I can succeed at this too. Sorry this post is so long, I guess I just needed to work this out in my head.

Please know you're not alone in thinking this. From what I can tell on some of the blogs we've all had the same thoughts (I had it this morning while stepping on the scale only to see 1 more lb gone). However, you need to remember this is not a diet. You have a entirely new way of life waiting for you. With the band you cannot eat (maybe in the beginning before you get it tightened) huge amounts of food because you will get sick or something will get stuck (you will never do that again). Stick with connecting with your local support group and this support group and you will learn alot and get tons of support. Begin to journal your experience, thoughts, and fears as well as your hopes and dreams for your future. You will be fine.

I had this same discussion with a friend at church yesterday. My surgery is on Aug. 5. I think it is a pretty normal fear to have.......

I think most of us have had similiar thoughts during those pre-op days, but we are doing well overall from what I have seen the past couple of months on this site.

Like you, I have tried many diets and have yo-yo'd for much of my adult life, only to steadily gain more weight. Sometimes it is better to remain fat than to continue the insanity of yo-yo dieting. That is much harder on the heart than remaining big, in some cases.

If you have made up your mind to have surgery, then go for it. I just think you have to be absolutely ready. It took me several years of researching the band and more failed attempts to finally make up my mind that I was ready to be healthy and happy once and for all. I knew the band was the tool I needed to succeed. Most of my eating was done for emotional reasons or out of boredom. Seldomly did I eat just because I was hungry. I figured if I wasn't able to eat much, then I couldn't just stuff my face all day and would have to come up with other ways to relieve stress and those blahs I had often.

It has only been a short while since I was banded (june 30th), but I feel so much better and food is not a big factor in my life anymore. I am so loving the Banded life and I hope you will too.

Best wishes,

Stephanie

It's not uncommon to have that fear, I still do every once and a while but you just have to remember that with the band and proper restriction you physically won't be able to eat large amounts. Some people lose faster than others but I think that the majority of people lose the weight.

You said you've tried so many other diets and weren't successful, so I guess I have to ask - what do you have to lose by having the lapband? It obviously works for people and you will be one of them!

Good luck and hang in there, it's a rocky journey but it's worth it!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
