Elliptical Use After Surgery

Recommended Posts

I am about 3 weeks post op and I want to know how long did you wait to use the elliptical machine after you had surgery. My nurse said 2 weeks post op is ok and my surgeon told me to wait a little longer. He said to just use the treadmill for now.

I did the treadmill 2 weeks post op but the elliptical was calling my name. I started it at 3 weeks but I would only do it for 15 instead of my normal 45. I waited about 6 weeks to do weights/aerobic classes and last but not least I returned to Ab exercises at 2 months. I am 7 months post op and I still have problems sometimes with the ab classes.

I waited about 3-weeks before i started working out again. I started on the elliptical trainer about 30-minutes 4-days a week because i could feel my port and it was still really sore at that point... My Dr. told me to wait a few months to start ab excercises and i am going to start them tomorrow.. but i would say yes just start out with 20-30-minutes.... and u should be fine.. but u know when u workout it takes u longer to loose weight because your fat is turning into muscle and we all know muscle weighs more... but eventually the weight will start to drop off...

Thank you for your responses. I will go at it slowly and try a few minutes on the elliptical and see how it goes.

I was back on the elliptical for 40 minute sessions by about 3 weeks. Its fairly low impact, that's how I got fit enough to start running.

I was told treadmill only for about one month. I just about there, so plan to start other cardio equipment this week. Am itching to get back to Pilates reformer, but I think I have to wait as there is a lot of ab work and resistance work with the reformer. I go back for my 6 week post-op in two weeks. Hopefully I'll get the okay to go back to light weights.

I waited eleven days before getting back on elliptical trainer after surgery. Just listen to your body when your working out and take it easy, start slow.

Argh, this is frustrating! :smile2: I've only been banded two weeks and I really want to do something other than walking the dog for miles and miles every day! I was doing a lot of weight training, situps, and other core work before surgery and it's making me crazy to have to sit around and wait for my incisions to stop zinging me all the time. Especially since I'm stuck here at home with no job.

Suggestions for anything besides the elliptical? Last week my doc said two weeks before lifting anything heavier than 20 lbs ... do you suppose he meant two weeks from surgery? (I know, he didn't, but I'm trying to convince myself that maybe it would be OK.)

You definetly have to listen to your own body. 4 days after surgery I wasn't feeling any discomfort so I started the treadmill and elliptical (only did about 15 minutes on treadmill) and 10 on the elliptical. I took it slow to make sure I wasn't going to have any complications. Since that went so well, I renewed my gym membership about 1 week after surgery. Been going to the gym 4-5 times per week for 45 minutes to 1 hr, I also do a Tybo bootcamp the rest of the week.

4 days after for me too, by doctor's orders. He does not play the waiting game for exercise. Other than lifting weights, his orders are "to get to it, sooner rather than later." Weights after one month.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
