I don't want to scare you but it sounds like you might have pneumonia. I would contact your doctor right away or go to the ER. They would be able to check your oxygen levels.

Did you do your deep breathing exercises after you got home or did they give you something to work with? Pneumonia is common for post-op abdominal surgeries if you don't keep up with deep breathing and coughing exercises. They are designed to keep your lungs clear through the first few days post op when your activity is decreased.

Are you having any fever? Are you walking alot? Sometimes walking helps with the drainage of liquid, but try doing some deep breathing exercises to see if that helps. If they didn't give you, what is called an incentive spirometer, to use post op, you can blow out through a straw, blow bubbles, or even a party horn. These exercises help increase your lung capacity and keep those lungs clear.

Please check with your Doc to be sure everything is ok. I hope it gets better soon.

Sincerely,

Stephanie

Sounds like it could be a case of atelectasis (where the tiny air sacs in your lugs have collapsed shut because of a lack of deep breathing). The thing to do, like now before you spike a fever, is to breath very deeply, hold, and slowly release. Do this 10x every 1-2 hours. Atelectasis can turn to pneumonia very easily. Do call your doctor, but work on those deep breaths every hour or two (uh, don't worry it so much while it's time to sleep).

hmm i just had my surgery not even 24 hrs ago and its hard for me to breath.. i figured because of my asthma and maybe the gas they put in me for the surgery. They didnt give me breathing excersizes but I am trying to do some anyways. If I were you I would call the nurse and ask what she thinks :)

It is very important to do those deep breathing exercises for several days after surgery. It is usually recommended to do them every 1 - 2 hours.

I hope you get to feeling better soon.

Thanks so much everyone. I love the help we can get here. I did go to my Dr. today and had a chest xray and all looked good! So i am starting on those breathing excersizes, and will keep and eye on it.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
