Anyone ever popped a port stitch?

Recommended Posts

Okay, here's the deal:

I'm one week post op and thought I was well on the way to recovery.

I was getting ready for my first day back at work this morning when I bent down from a seated position to pick up something from the floor. This is when I felt a VERY distinct POP in the port area...such a pop that it almost seemed like I HEARD it although I don't know how that could be so. There was ZERO question that something had just happened. There was little pain associated with it at the time...but over the course of the day it has become VERY painful.

I called the dr's office and spoke to a nurse. She seemed very casual about it and said it sounded like I popped a stitch and not to worry about it. She said it isn't uncommon and it will 'just hurt like all get out'. She said there are several more holding it in place. I spoke to a second nurse later who said the exact same thing without me telling her what the first nurse said.

THat's all well and good...and it was reassuring...but it just felt like I bigger deal to me. It felt like the whole port ripped loose or something!!! Has anyone else had this happen?? Please share if you have. I don't see how it could just be 'no big deal'.

Sorry this became lengthy. Any responses are welcomed!!

Oh my.... I'm a week out (tomorrow) and will now be even more careful with what I am doing so this doesn't happen to me!

What sort of pain are you having?

When I cough or sneeze, my port incision feels like it's ripping open from the inside... Like a stabbing/stinging/burning pain. It's dreadful.

oh dear...I would take your drs advice...if they aren't overly concerned, then I would try not to be as well..

However...I thought you sked if anyone had ever pooped a port stitch and I was laughing at you thinking that you could poop a stitch...

sorry to have laughed at you!!!

Well, that's the pain I'm feeling, except it's all the time now.

***BUT....to ease your mind, this was LITERALLY a POP. It's not like I bent down and just thought 'hmm, that hurt, hope I didn't damage anything'. So don't think just because you're having pain that this may have happened to you. It was a very distinct, odd feeling. You would know it FOR SURE..not from the pain but by the 'pop'. I hate to keep using that word, but that's what it was...a --POP-- , not a tear.

I hope you feel better soon & thanks for sharing. Now that I am feeling better, I have been doing things I probably shouldn't be. I will be more careful now.

I don't know if I've popped a stitch, but I'm a bit over one month post op and one of my incisions near where the port is has a bit of suture material sticking out of it. I go in Tuesday for my first fill and I'll have them look at it....

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
