Anyone cheat on their pre-op diet? Any problems with surgery because of it? I am on a 2 week diet, but I had a grilled chicken sandwhich on wheat bread when I didnt have access to my shakes! I also had a cup of coffee. I know, bad! This is the hardest thing I've ever had to do...

I think a lot of people have cheated a little bit. I didn't -- my doctor has been known to cancel surgery if you didn't lose the weight he told us to lose. Also I was really afraid of not shrinking my liver enough and having them cancel surgery after they'd already gotten started. A little bit paranoid, maybe... anyway, just stick to it from this point forward and you'll be fine. It's a good test for how you're going to do after the band, too!

i'm going to be blunt and i hope it doesn't offend. if you cheated. ok that's in the past. if you continue to cheat, you should know that it will only get harder after the surgery and maybe this isn't for you. i know you might think "that b*tch" but this isn't easy...it's hard afterwards..and i think in the beginning is when we're all charged up and super strict.

i'd move forward following the docs orders and you'll see the rewards for all your hard work.

Hi Missrach,

I'm two days away from surgery and I'm scared that they will not be able to do my surgery due to my "cheating". I was supposed to be on the Optifast diet plus steamed vegetables for 21 days before surgery but started a few days early because I had so many special functions/dinner parties/celebrations to attend that I thought I needed a buffer.

Unfortunately I strayed off the path quite a bit. I've been reading the forums and know in my head that the reason for the optifast (liquid Protein diet) is to shrink the liver so that they can do the surgery but it is still so hard to stay on the liquid diet because all I can do is think about food.< /p>

I wish I had listened to all the other bandsters who tried to keep me movtivated -- I wouldn't be so worried about it today.

A few of the ppl on the forum have suggested I stay positive and keep to the diet for the next few days so I'm trying.

I know it is hard.... i even tried to get through one hour at a time..

if there is anything you can do to stop you from doing what I did I'd encourage you to do it to avoid cheating.

I'll post after my surgery (hopefully the doctor won't refuse to do it because my liver is too fatty) and let you know how I made out.

I wouldn't want you to have to feel like I do today. hope you can avoid cheating. They say it gets easier if you let your body go into ketosis after the third of fourth day.

Good luck!

d

I to am on the two week liquid diet. I did a three month liquid diet before and lost 36lbs. I gained six back since getting off the diet. But now I doing liquid before suregery. My question is I have lost 30lbs already do I need to lose more? My Dr. said he would like 5 to 10 lbs off but he didn't realize I have already lost 30.

Don't fret. I did the same thing. I had been doing really good on my pre-op diet until 2 days before surgery. Then stupidly I ate a sandwich and some chips..... just 2 days before surgery!!!!! I was so upset with myself the rest of the day, so much my husband thought I was crazy. I had my surgery on June 27th, and everything went great. So it won't kill you, but just get back on the wagon, and everything will work out. Good luck to you.

I dont really think a small indiscretion like that on the preop is much to worry about - I mean its not as if you binged on cake. Just put it behind you and move on. It is really hard, that pre op diet, I'm so glad I didnt have to do one.

My surgery is July 8th and i've also been guilty of cheating a little on my diet. I have still lost weight and inches so it's not a complete disaster. Not to say that cheating isn't wrong, but it depends on the extent to which you didn't follow doctor's orders. There are many programs that don't require a pre-surgery diet at all and several people in that category have been known to splurge on a big "last meal" right before surgery without any problems. Again, not following the plan is wrong, but try to eat the right things from here on out and odds are that everything will turn out okay. Good luck!

I'm on week 2 of my pre-op liquids and I haven't cheated. In fact, there was some black bean skins in my Soup the other night and I felt horrible for eating them because I have explicit instructions not to eat ant "chunks or pieces" The only thing that keeps me from not cheating is knowing how dissapoined I would be in myself. I've spent 20 years of my life being dissapointed in myself because of food. It's time to stop.

Good luck on your surgery, don't stray again and IMO you should mention your indescretion to your doctor.

i was so hungry I ate 2 buffalo burgers (no bread) 2 days before surgery. A little cheat here or there won't matter but DO NOT CHEAT the day before. You need to have an empty stomach on the day of surgery

Just hang in there a little longer. This diet wont last forever. You just need to get back on the wagon. Once you are banded, it will be a easier in that you will not be hungry much at all during the liquid phase.

Hi. I did the same! My surgeon makes everyone go on the Atkins diet at least 2 weeks before. I had time so I started it 4 weeks before. I thought I was going to throw chicken breasts at passers by I was so frustrated. I somewhat buckled down the last 5 days and lost the last 5 pounds and the doctor never even checked my liver before going in or anything. Good luck ad hang in there!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
