Evil Evil Shrimp

Recommended Posts

I love shrimp. But, I relized last night that the band may have made it impossible for me to eat them. I've only had them twice since banding in November. Both times, I ended up getting a hellacious jam in my chest and then throwing up several times. The first time, I thought it was a fluke. Last night, after hurling into the bushes on my patio, I began to think it was related to the band.

Maybe I eat them too fast and they react differently than other solids? I only ate three medium-size grilled shrimp - probably less than 2 ounces all together. I can eat that much tuna, steak, crab, or chicken without batting an eye. What is it about those tastly shrimp?!?!? I hate to give them up for ever.

Anyone else have problems with shrimp?

I've heard of people having problems with shrimp, for some reason. I'm also hoping that's wrong, or that it doesn't happen to everyone, because I eat shrimp very often. So far since I got my band I haven't had a problem with them, but I don't have full restriction yet either.

I have the exact same problem. I was banded on 5/14/08 and was okay with them until may first fill on June 24th. Now they feel like a 20 lb weight in my chest. I am sorry for you, I enjoy them but I don't feel like I have to have them. I only ate 3 as well and knew that was my limit. I have the same issue with any type of beef. But chicken and fish are still okay. I am a little afraid to try pork but I guess I will get over that at some point. Good luck if you find a way to enjoy eating them let me in on it.

Banded in Feb 08 and feel that I have good restriction at 7.5 in a 10cc band. yet not too tight, I havnt had shrimp yet. eek. However have had issues with both pork and steak. I am not really a meat eater so I dont have too many issues. However I definitely have too keep check on myself for chewing and eating too fast or else,,,, I find that if it seems a bit dry it will cause me some problems.. so chew chew chew..

I don't have any problem with shrimp. In fact, they go down and stay down better than most other Proteins for me. But I'm due to be filled tomorrow, that could all change! I hope not though, shrimp are my favorite.

I have done fine with shrimp and lobster, but scallops have been 2 of my worst pbs ever. I avoid scallops!

Try boiling and eat peel and eat instead of grilled. The meat of shrimp tends to be a little more fibrous than other meats and doesn't break down as well in the chewing process. I've found I do better with boiled. Grilled drys it out and makes them even more chewy. Also, try pulsing them in a food processor after being cooked, mix with mayo and other goodies and make a shrimp salad. Plus, DON'T overcook shrimp. Overcooking makes them rubbery. Three minutes on a rolling boil is all they need!!!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
