I need help from my Junies! PLEASE!

Recommended Posts

So, my Dr. just started doing surgeries at the big, wonderful "ladies" hospital here in town. He's done hundreds, but just started at this particular hospital. So I chose to have it there. Part of the "package" was to meet with the hospital nutritionist. She gave me a binder with very specific instructions as to what I can eat. Total Clear liquids for 7 days after surgery, then straight to chicken. Seriously!

After doing some reading, I realized that this was wrong, called my doctor, and was told to do 7 days clear fluids, 7 days full fluids, and 14 days of mushies. At that point, I will have my first post-op, and we'll talk about everything.

My issue is, what is full liquids, REALLY? I don't feel like I can ask the nutritionist, because she's been missinformed. So far, I think it's cream Soups, pudding, Protein drinks, milk, but what else?

So, what have ya'll been eating? How many ounces per how many hours? When do you drink?

Bless you all!

My surgeon includes unsweetened applesauce, mashed potatoes (thinned w/milk), cream of rice, cream of wheat, pureed-then-strained vegetables (thinned w/veg. juice), and pureed fruits w/o seeds or skins as full liquids.

I got the Progresso light southwestern-style vegetable Soup and blended it (it has to be strained, too) - it's very flavorful. And you can add unflavored Protein powder to it for a boost.

(I am SO looking forward to my soft solid stage, which starts next Friday!)

I was told that full liquids were anything that would pass through a straw (but do not use a straw! That is a no-no!) I stuck with Campbell's Soup at Hand and V8 Splash. I didn't do eggs or mashed potatos until the mushie stage. I am now on full foods and about to go crazy cause I need a fill.

Good luck to you!

PS be sure to check the food and nutrition section. It has the best information.

I was also told that full liquids was anything that was liquid that could fit through a straw---but not to drink it through a straw!!!

Good luck

What does the straw do if it is like a protien drink? More gas?

Yes, the straw lets you suck in air and gives you more gas. I love the Protein Shakes with a straw, but have started to just drink it.

The things I had to give up as to loose the straw and stop chewing gum both increase the gas. From what I understand is that the excess gas not only hurts, but it can increase the size of your pouch. The carbonated drinks, ie cokes, alos will increase the size of the stomach pouch.

Anyway, hope that helps!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
